I posted this in my Palm Pre VS iPhone thread, but i figured this deserved its own thread to discuss all the different videos and its features. There's some really cool stuff going on. And the emulator is on a mac!
Come onnnn, Palm! Let's see some fantastic mac support!
Note: I understand it's still just an emulator, but i feel it gives a more in depth picture of what the pre can do.

I almost fell for the Pre with all those leaked info that it can do it all. Even Flash and the gushing of bloggers and tech writers. Then I remembered how crappy Palm was to Mac users and their crappy integration for Mac. So if your a Mac user, screw Palm. You'll end up being a second class citizen again.

These videos make the Pre look amazing. It seems to have everything one could want. To say that firmware 3.0 neutralizes everything the Pre stands for and does is simply wrong.

However, this is just an emulator, just like the iPhone we see in iPhone commercials. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Wow in the Q&A Session 1 they guy casually mentions a megaton weakness.
Sprint doesn't do data and voice at the same time. Is this really true?
If so its like going back to EDGE on the iPhone.

sadly, it is true. I can't understand why, though. I don't know if this is a true limitation of sprint's technology, or if they are limiting it themselves to save bandwidth or something.
If the latter is the case then maybe they'll undo it for the pre or something, but probably not.

forgive me if i sound like an idiot, but can anyone give me some examples of needing data and voice at the same time? I can't imagine being on a call and having to surf the web, but i've heard the data/voice is a must have for people who've gotten used to it on the iphone. i must be missing something

Getting a text message or Email or using information such as Sales Force to look up your customers information or check the status of Inventory. I personally use to to check the status of my servers and database status while on conf calls.

this could be true, but the whole idea with the pre is that ALL syncing is done through the cloud, so there's no such thing as OS incompatibility.
But we'll have to wait and see how this ACTUALLY works when it's released considering there have been no videos on this.

Also, I highly doubt music will be synced OTA. But most everything else is. Even software updates are done automatically ota which sounds great on paper! can't wait to see how it works in reality.

The biggest problem is when your phone is automatically retrieving email and someone calls you. The phone will go send the call directly to voicemail. The bad part is the phone never shows a missed call some people don't leave messages and just expect that you see the missed call and call you back. Then they get pissed off when you are ignoring them when you had no idea they even called.

Another example is using google maps at the same time you are in a call.

Or looking up info in an email while on the phone.

The bad part is the phone never shows a missed call some people don't leave messages and just expect that you see the missed call and call you back. oh, wow. that's absurd. Hopefully the Pre will take phone calls over email. I'd rather wait on my email message than not get a phone call. But maybe this isn't possible. If it was you'd think apple would've done it.
I get the hype now. that's def a big downer for the pre.

Sprint has said the Pre isn't for "IT tech people" or something - that relegates the phone largely to 'toy' status. In which case, entertainment becomes a bigger player for the device. I doubt the entertainment features on the Pre will match that of iPhone, and business features don't even compare to Blackberry.

Are you serious? I missed that one, and NO ONE seems to mention that during their gushing reviews. The tech bloggers/writers seems to conveniently leave that one out.

I think this is only because it's not in anyone's hands yet. people "conveniently" left out the fact that the iphone didn't have video recording or MMS, only because there were so many other awesome things about it. but once it got into the hands of the public, people were like, "wait... i can't send a picture message?"

the same will happen with the pre i'm sure. these reviewers are not out to get apple or make this phone look better than it is...

Yup, and they conveniently forgot to mention it in the original iPhone reviews too

what? Pre does notification at the bottom of whatever app u are using, what do you mean you will not get a notification of a incoming call? I highly doubt what you described scenario is true with Pre.

But is that a sprint or palm issue, I suspect its sprint not palm, they can't afford to miss a feature like that in the os.

Personally I haven't ever had the need to do both data and voice at the same time so it isn't exactly a weekness and I will more than likely get an eos (the candybar version) when it comes out in the UK

Palm webos atleast syncs over the air, with online servers and theres atleast one software company producing a desktop sync app for it so in terms of out of the box there definitely isnt any bias
