If I could have one thing to be announced in the Apple Watch Series 5, it would be significantly better GPS in the watch. It's absolutely abysmal at times. A recent export to Strava claimed I managed to run 400m in 44 seconds. The world record is 43 seconds. It was getting quite annoying, so here's a way of repairing bad GPX files before uploading to Strava. It's a pain, but if you want more accurate data, this works.

  1. Record your workout in an app that can export GPX. I recommend WorkOutDoors, but I think most apps record in GPX and you can capture that GPX file using HealthFit.
  2. Export the GPX file to a cloud storage area (I use OneDrive)
  3. Upload the GPX file to Track Profiler: https://trackprofiler2.appspot.com/
  4. Find and repair the bad GPS data (It provides drag and drop waypoints you can move)
  5. Save this file. If you don't mind the lack of heart rate data, upload this file straight to Strava. Job done.
If you want to retain heart rate data then continue -
  1. Save the file from Track Profiler under a different name from the original GPX so you now have 2 files
  2. Upload both files to Gotoes - https://gotoes.org/strava/Combine_GPX_TCX_FIT_Files.php
  3. Select the heart rate data from the original file, and the GPS data from the repaired file
  4. Gotoes connects to Strava Connect and can export straight to Strava.
This gives a much more accurate GPS data, which has less chance of corrupting your Strava PRs. Figured I would share it for anyone who is frustrated with bad GPS.
