A1156 remote and 2007 imac

I have the opportunity of a free A1156 remote.

I thought be handy for CD/DVD playback on my 20" imac.

My imac is running el capitan.

I read the imac has IR.

will it work?

If not then I will pass and let my friend ebay the remote.

will the newer remotes work with my imac too?

I don't need the remote but if it is free and will work then why say no.
