Just noticed something interesting, the A10X had 12 GPU cores but the A12X had only 7 GPU cores, but performed at twice the A10X's GPU performance. What is the reason for this? Is it because the A12X has more efficient GPU cores that lets it perform at twice as much with 40% fewer cores?

Efficiency gets better as technology advances over the years.

I studied this issue in depth. The A10X does NOT have HMP or Heterogeneous Mult-Processing the A12X does. So all the Cores can work together at the Same time even the GPU Cores.

So the A10X has 6 Cores + 12 GPU Cores thats = 18 But No HMP so only 3 CPU Cores at a time = 15
The A12X has 8 Cores + 7 GPU Cores thats = 15

I hope this helps.

The 7 GPU cores found in the A12X are/were the 1st GPU cores “designed by Apple” where as the 12 core found in A10X were customized “Imagination PowerVR” cores.

the cores are completely different. HMP doesn’t apply to GPU cores since they always process in parallel and are all identical, and it’s not necessarily more efficient. the answer is that each A12X GPU core is more powerful than a A10X GPU core. it’s like comparing an Nvidia core to an AMD core, just having more cores doesn’t always guarantee more power because the cores are designed differently.
