Are there any obvious advantages of the a14x ipad pro making the current one obsolete and not worth the money currently?

Mini-LED, so the screen will be better, 5G and the A14X chip will be a new generation. The 2020 iPad Pro uses the A12Z Bionic which is near identical to the A12X of the 2018 iPad Pro.

It's a difficult one, personally im still using my 2017 iPad Pro, I'm pondering the upgrade. However it depends if th new one will be release in 2021 or later this year (as some leakers say). I don't mind if it's next year, but this year would be very annoying after just upgrading to the 2020 version.

I think that it will run both iPadOS and macOS. When they demoed Big Sur they mentioned that the finder menus had been spaced out more, why do this? Touch support. Just like on Windows 10 when you enable touch mode in applications it spaces out items to make for larger hit boxes.

So i reckon, A14X chip paired with 8-16GB RAM and 512GB storage, priced around $1999. Probably renamed the iPad Pro X or iPad X Pro or possibly, iPad Pro AF ;)

Ah, I'm getting it. Apple is making their version of the Surface Pro. :)

Very interesting. Wonder if it will be like Surface Pro (iPad turning into a laptop with keyboard accessories), or the Surface Book (A Macbook where you can take the screen part off into an iPad).

I'm going to guess the former.

I seriously doubt that will happen. Apple keeps the iPad Pro and Macs separate, the iPad Pro is a different device than a Mac and vis versa. The Mac may get more like an iPad in looks but Apple won't put touch on a Mac.

The base msrp iPad Pro 11 is $799 and base msrp iPad Pro 12.9 is $999 without keyboard. The direct competitor is surface pro series. Apple keeps rising the prices of iPad “pro”. iPad Pro 10.5 base msrp was $650? When it launched? iPad Pro 11 2018 was $799/64g when it launched.

we all know the next a14 series iPhone will have 6gb ram. The next a14x iPad Pro likely has 8gb ram (6gb at minimum).

it’s hard to predict how future proof the a12z 6gb model will be. Apple is very efficient with ram usage as 2gb ram still runs well even on my kids A10/2gb iPad 6th gen budget 9.7 iPad and iPad Pro 9.7 a9x 2gb ram.

I believe Mac and iPad were separate before because they were two separate ecosystem. But now, it seems that the two ecosystem are merging. It's possible now for a developer to make an iPad app and also target Macs. I wouldn't dismiss the possibility of Apple version of something like the Surface Pro, but the UI separation is more clear. Eg. When detached, the device uses iPad OS UI, when attached, it will use macos UI. One app store. Buy once and you can use both the Mac and iOS version of the app. It will be the same app but smart enough to adjust to the environment whether it's in Mac mode or iPad mode. That would be neat. It's basically what Microsoft dreamt up in UWP.

If the A14X is going to also be used in Mac laptops, then I could see the iPad Pro based on the same chip to get more than one USB-C port (one on each side?), probably USB4, as Apple will have baked this in for the Mac).

When I’m using the magic keyboard, I only find myself touching the screen in the YouTube app, much is unusable without touching. In the future, when all the apps are compiled using the same instruction set, it wouldn’t seem crazy for me for an iPad Pro to run Mac OS when docked to a magic keyboard.

Been tossing around purchase options all morning between buying now and waiting to see what they do with next upgrade. I think I'm just going to bite the bullet and get the current iPad Pro 12.9 with smart keyboard. Will last few years easy. could be 9 months before an upgrade and the resale value will be decent enough that upgrading then wont be too much of a hassle.

I am all in on the new iPad Pro if they have mini-led displays. I will definitely upgrade to that. But if it doesn’t, then I can wait. Having a better display is something that I look forward to. Processor speed? Not so much, especially current gen iPad Pros are blazingly fast. Although it is worth mentioning that if Apple is going all in on ARM chips on their iMacs and Mac laptops, it will be interesting to see just what kind of performance improvements we might see from these new generation chips.

Tim said new ARM Macs will be released in 2020, which bodes well for an A14X iPad Pro release this year.

In other words, an A14X iPad Pro might in fact be a 2020 iPad Pro.

I can’t see macOS running on an iPad. It might be an acceptable experience for people with a keyboard and trackpad setup, but it would suck for those without. Having spent some time trying to use a Windows tablet, its a fiddly nightmare trying to touch stuff which wasn’t designed to be touched. I think Apple were right in the approach they’ve taken.

Will someone jailbreak an iPad and get Big Sur running on it? I’m sure they will! Would i want to use it? Not sure...
