Frustrating problem with my A1989. Recently purchased via Ebay. (I7 processor). Running Sonoma (bought it this way) All of the letter keys stopped responding although the quote, caps lock and function keys work. Track Pad only right clicks even if you're left clicking.

I can type just fine using an external keyboard, but cannot seem to reset PRAM boot to safe or update other settings with the external keyboard.

Any ideas what I can do here or does the keyboard need to be replaced?

Uh oh.

That one has the "butterfly" keyboard.
This means the keyboard alone is NOT "replaceable" -- the ENTIRE TOP CASE will need to be replaced.

This repair will cost you a minimum of $750 US. Perhaps more.

Are you still within the return period?

ouch! will need to check on the return period but thanks for the info. I can stop stressing about trying to solve this issue through keyboard commands.

If you can return it, RETURN IT.

DO NOT buy another Mac laptop on ebay.
Get one from the Apple online refurbished store.
Costs a little more, but then you KNOW what you're getting.
