Some might be thinking this should be in the iPad section, but I am putting it in the iphone because my idea is presented to suggest that the same A4 chip will be launched on the 4th gen iphone.

So does anyone know what the A4 stands for? A for apple presumably.. but why the 4? I did a quick search and couldn't find anything.

I believe it to mean that this chip was designed specifically for the iPhone OS 4.0. This would suggest that the same A4 chip will be put in the newest iphone and ipod touch. Which is quite exciting. Imagine the power consumption improvements! :)

If you want to take the name "A4" a step further I believe it might even stand for Apple OS 4.0; a shift from iPhone OS 4.0. This transition seems quite logical to me. I mean the same OS runs on three different devices. I think it's only a matter of time till the name changes from iphone to something more generic... and as apple is continuing it's focus into the touch domain (iphone, ipod, ipad, eventual iMac that's rumored??) I think it's likely that the primary OS will eventually be based around this touch "iPhone" OS. So it makes sense to call it Apple OS and continue to expand it and grow it until it is at least equal in computing power to Mac OS. Possibly eventually even taking over as the primary (or only) OS made by apple.

Just some thoughts.

That's a possibility, but like a lot of things in this world, it might not really mean anything and we just give it a meaning that makes sense. It's like a high school english teacher looking way too deep into a book and finding "deeper meaning" and symbolism that only they see

Wouldn't that mean they'd have to line up the OS and new chip releases every year?

What if they want to come out with a new iPad next January with a brand new A5 chip? Ohhh...sorry. The marketing guys say we have to wait until June with OS 5 comes out if you want to use that chip!

It just seems like they'd be tying their hands for no real reason.

I kind of doubt they'd want to do that.

not necessarily. the OP just means that this specific chip could have been designed to work excelently with OS 4.0, they don't have to make a new chip each time they make a new OS and vice versa

Now wouldnt that be nice. Only time will tell

Right exactly. I mean the A4 is working on 3.2 just fine. And all the older versions of iphone and ipod touch will work fine on 4.0. But I'm just suggesting that possibly the name hints at the next OS. and also meaning that the same chip will be used across the board. Maybe the A4 will even have some added refinement with the interaction between hardware and software, since Apple designed it themselves specifically for this purpose, but not necessarily.
