Aaah!! I can't wait!! My first ever mac, a MBP arrives tomorrow...in about 15 hours' time!!! Tonight will be pretty sleepless!! I'm even getting off work early so I can come home and play!!!

And a question...I've read all about battery calibration and stuff, and I'm wondering, seeing how more than 90% of the time my MBP will be plugged in to the power outlet, is it really necessary to calibrate the battery?

And will it damage the battery if, say, over a 9 month period the laptop is plugged in the whole time?

Apple describes the battery in a 'resting state' when the power is plugged in, so does that mean that the battery is bypassed?

Hi,

According to apple you should exercise your battery to keep it in good working order. IIRC their website says somewhere "The ideal situation would be a worker who uses his laptop at work on the mains and then uses it on the train home on battery each day". I don't think you have to go that far but about once a week I would make sure that the battery is at least half discharged and then refilled. I would then also, once a month, completely discharge the battery and recalibrate.

Chris

Congratulations...

Hope you enjoy yourself when it arrives... Woooo the excitement of it all.
I'm excited for you too :D

Just out of interest... did you order Glossy or Matte?

About the battery.. yeah, i would let it discharge fully (until it sleeps and won't wake up). Then just plug in your A/C charger and away it goes.

I've been doing this with my 15" Powerbook for the past year and a half, and my battery runs for at least 2.5 hours from full charge (don't know what it's supposed to be, but 2.5 hours is fine for a 1.5 year old Powerbook).

Enjoy your MBP.

Ahh..the wait..it's killer but anyways, Congrats!

I couldn't tell from your post but did you purchase a new or refurb MBP? Which model?

Buy any accessories for it yet?

ah yes the wait.. i was in the same boat as you (first mac ever too). you will NOT be disappointed. absolutely amazing quality in every way, and i even got a refurb haha so if yours is refurb or new youll be greatly satisfied

and i would still recommend calibrating your battery no matter what, you dont want it gettin shotty on you down the line

I got a new 2.33ghz 15" GLOSSY. Personally, I like the glossy...makes it look prettier!

Aah! It's the morning! Only a few hours to go!!! I'm gonna be like a fat kid in a candy shop!

I also got a wireless mighty mouse, and a dvi to video adapter (v.important). That's it really. Oh and I've got a nice targus backpack on order. That's all...

It's beautiful. Arrived at 9am...had to go to work..:( but then I came home early!!! And here I am!!

It's not too hot (though I'll use fan control anyway), I think it's a week 70 build? Is that right? My serial number goes W870 something...

Well, just thought I'd wrap up the 'saga' for you guys! Now I'm officially in the Mac club! YAY! :D

Congrats on your new macbook pro. Dont forget to calibrate that battery.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Mac!!!
Enjoy that great machine you have- I wish I could upgrade my little ol' iBook right now.

Be sure to unplug that thing every few weeks to drain the battery, then charge it back up. That way it keeps it charge going. My wife never unplugged her iBook battery and it stopped keeping a charge when disconnected!

OH btw I'm up to the '5+ hours of battery resting' stage of the battery calibration... so I'm back on my old computer. :(

Waiting 5 hours should take me to 10:30pm tonight.
After that I'm supposed to plug it back in? When I do that, should I leave it turned off and let it fully charge? Or can I still use it?

Should I wait overnight before I charge it back up, or is 5 hours enough? I'll probably recalibrate every month, so does the first calibration matter?

you dont need to calibrate it every month, probably around every year.

Congrats! :D You selected an excellent computer... the same I'm looking forward to getting in the future! How has everything been with it so far?

Congratulations on your purchase. Like you, my 15" MBP C2D is my first foray into the wonderful world of Mac. Certainly won't be my last!

I am planning to calibrate my battery every couple of months. After you've let it sleep for 5 hours, plug it back in and let it charge up again. I'd also recommend you install the fan control tool, it really makes a difference when you're doing high intensive tasks (like DVD encoding).

Congrats ....... it will bring much joy.

To really Pi** off your PC buddies, get a .Mac email address.
