Abnormal fan activity Mac Pro 2009 upgraded

Hi

I have a 2009 Mac Pro upgraded to 12 core x5690 with a GPU Asus GT 610 fanless.

It was running ultra smooth during several month. Ultra silent, fantastic for music production. Even I'd carried out some tests to take the Cpu to the limit with Logic Pro X, I never had a problem with the Mac pro fans.

But I've installed the Seagate Paragon software which requires restart after install. And the mac pro fans started to run at high speed. I uninstalled the Paragon software, restarted several times but even if the computer has no apps open, the fans start to run incrissingly. The noise makes the machine unworkable. I have a full 1 TB start up disk and am quite afraid of restoring the system from the TM backup.

Is there a way I can fix the fans without having to restore the system??
Will restoring the system from the backup fix the fans issue??

Might Work

You could attempt to unplug the Mac and allow it to remain unpowered for a few minutes. Without external power the SMC should reset and that might solve your problems.
 
is it possible you may be experiencing the same problem as many others with upgraded graphics cards where, after a cold boot, the fans (particularly the PCI and PS fans) will rev up until you push the video card for a bit and they settle down? as many others have reported, a simple fix for this particular problem is to download OpenGL Extensions Viewer, open it and run one of the "tests" for a bit.

i know mine has this problem with a flashed 680, only after a cold boot. i can't say for sure this is what's happening with yours, but it can't hurt to try.
 
The SMC reset did solve the problem!! Thanks!. Silent and workable again:)

Update: Noisy again:( It lasted just for a few hours... I tried to open OpenGL Extensions but the application is crashing all the time while opening.

Anyone got a suggestion before I make a system restore??

the OpenGL extensions trick is only meant to push your gpu for a bit. you don't have to use that program (since it crashes on you). you can fire up a game for a bit or do something 3D intensive just to let the GPU "warm up". I know it sounds strange, but after cold boots (for me) it's the only way to calm the beast. worth a shot anyways.
 
Furmark is one of the quickest way to "warm up" the graphic card. Not necessary to use OpenGL extension.

Anyway, the whole idea of that procedure is just let the OS command the fan spin up. You may actually use any free fan controlling software to spin up the fan manually, and then switch it back to idle. The PCIe fan should spin down to 800 RPM slowly.
 
It seems that it is fixing itself over time. Sometimes just a few minutes after start up the fan starts accelerating with no apps running up to 4400 Rpm, but sometimes it just stays at 800 Rpm.

When the fan starts behaving erraticaly , I open Mac Fans Control and set BOOSTB (the crazy one, in my case) to "SENSOR Based on CPU B core from PCECI " and it fixes the problem immediately. After some seconds I just close Mac Fans Control without any further issues.
