I recently purchased a 2012 Mac mini, i5 processor, 4GB RAM, 500GB hard drive. I upgraded it to 8GB a few weeks ago. It was using about 1GB idle when it had 4GB RAM, but now it is using 1.7GB. After looking at other Macs at my school, it seemed that they were using around 0.9GB less RAM than mine. Is this usage abnormal? I have three dashboard apps and I frequently quit applications to free up memory, so neither of those could be the issue. Does anybody have thoughts or suggestions?

You don't need to worry about how your RAM is being used unless you're experiencing page outs under normal workloads. OS X will use whatever memory you have available and will automatically manage it without requiring user interference.
