Hi guys!

I have an iPhone 3g with iOS version 3.0 which is jailbroken and I want to know if i can install applications i want on it from Cydia, because when i try to install some apps from iTunes it won't letting me, because (for example) at an app under requirements most of them require iOS version 3.1 or later.

So i cannot install most of cool apps i want. So again can i install all apps from Cydia and does Cydia have requirements like iTunes or not?

Thanks :)

So why aren't you updating your software?

I don't know...will it be slower then?...and it will be unjailbroked too ?!
That's why im afraid..because i saw things that can be more slower and 4.2 is not very good for 3G...I don't know :$

Unfortunately, that's the problem with using older hardware - things become less and less compatible. You'll have to choose between incereased compatibility with decreased operating speed, or low compatibility with optimum operating speed.

And to answe your other question, yes, you'll need to re-jailbreak if you update. FYI - you don't have to update to the very latest firmware (5.1.1) on the 3G. IIRC, Apple allows a lower firmware version on the 3G - maybe another member can remind us what that is...

I think 3.1.3 is the most uptodate 3.1.3 is said to be the best on a 3g 4.2.1 is the last version you can install http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/ great place to get firmware and Iclarified has tutorials for all IOS versions. keep in mind the 3G is over 4 years old now and in the technology world that's like trying to hold onto your old Model A ford and expecting it to compete with all the other modern day cars.

That's right, thanks :)
So i will update to 3.1.3 but can u tell me if there will be options on iTunes to choose 3.1.3 because im afraid that iTunes will update automatically to 4.2 and is not going to let me to choose 3.1.3. And about sim card will it be locked then?

You will have to download the 3.1.3 IPSW, put the phone in DFU mode, use iTunes to navigate to the IPSW.

Get the IPSW here

If I recall correctly, to jailbreak, you will need an older version of Redsn0w (look way back in the iClarified.com tutorials for jailbreaking a 3G on 3.1.3) and point Redsn0w to 3.1.2 IPSW

The 3G can only be updated to 4.2.1. 4.2 is getting REALLY incompatible today - most apps (let alone games) require 4.3 at least.

Thanks!

First im going to download 3.1.3 IPSW from that site,

then i will put the iPhone in DFU mode with redsn0w (wait till the process end),

then open 3.1.3 IPSW from iTunes too (shift+restore) and wait for the process to finish.

I think that's all i need to do to update from 3.0 to 3.1.3....Am I right?

Sounds like you've got it. Let us know how it goes.

Shoot. Keep it simple. Once 3.1.3 is loaded simply nativate with Safari to, "www.jailbreakme.com" and slide to jailbreak. Still active and works well.

Once Cydia is loaded there are many updates Cydia will request and after that, smooth sailing.

Hey guys i noticed that i need two things:

iPhone1,2_3.1.3_7E18_Restore (this needs to open with redsn0w) and

iPhone1,2_3.1.3_7E18_Custom_Restore (this needs to open with iTunes)

so where can i get this iPhone1,2_3.1.3_7E18_Custom_Restore

thanks

That doesn't sound right. You only need one device firmware. I don't have a lot of experience with iPhones before the 4, so I'll let someone else clarify which firmware you need.

I'm lost here, I don't know what to do, I saw a lot of videos on youtube and all of them first open _Restore with redsn0w and put it in DFU mode and then they open _Custom_Restore with iTunes ?!

I am still a little surprised that this forum hasn't taken to http://www.whited00r.com/

I put this OS on my 3G and it was still fast. They take the latest Apple iOS and gut out the parts that make it slow. They replace some items, I know on iOS 4 they had their own video camera app.

Again, that sounds wrong. When restoring, you should download the correct firmware and save it to your computer.

Enter RedSn0w, and go through the Pwn'd DFU steps. Then go into iTunes, and press Shift+Restore.

Navigate to the iPSW you just downloaded, and select it. iTunes should install it onto you device.

In all of that, there is only one firmware in play - the one you download and save to your computer. In fact, there is only one step that should ask you to select a firmware...

thanks for reply ZCherub,

my iphone version is 3.0 and im trying to update it to 3.1.3. I'm not trying to restore it but to update it.

You still press 'Shift+Restore" in iTunes when you're using a firmware that is saved on your computer - even if it's technically an update.
