I am living outside the usa and want to stream us channels. Is netflix good for watching live tv ?

are there any free stuff if i subscribe ?

Sorry, there are no live streams on Netflix. Depending on the country you're in, the content is completely different. The US has access to a large selection of movies and TV shows, but here in Canada, we have a much smaller selection of not very recent movies.
Go to https://signup.netflix.com/BrowseSelection to see what is available in your country on Netflix.

netflix is an all or nothing thing, you subscribe, you get access to everything.

typically TV shows are a season behind. at the earliest, they will be up when the season ends. But every show is done depending on the agreement with the copyright holder, so it varies.

Since you're in the UK, i really don't know what netflix will get you. you'll have to look for yourself

Actually I need freebies, I can pay a fixed amount to netflix which is about 8us dollars but i do not want to a single dollar more for the content i will get. I am not mentioning movies as i get them from local stores but tv shows, series, episodes and similar staff all free ?

i have got 3mbit cable connection and I can stream 720p without any pause for 1080p i have to go to kitchen and make coffee for myself to spend some time when it buffers.

If netlfix is alright with my scenario, I will also need to sign up for vpn which doubles the cost. But not sure about the speed i will get with a vpn server since my connection speed is already poor.

Well for a start the 'new releases' section will get you straight to dvd movies from around 6 years ago!

Yet I still keep paying...

Until Netflix pick up their game you're perfectly fine to use 'questionable' streaming sites, although if you're looking for a good subscription service, I have been hearing good things about Amazon Prime, not bothered checking it out (or seeing if it's even active) yet though!

If you're streaming Netflix through your computer there are DNS/Proxy workarounds to let you get US content although they've been cracking down on all the free ones of late so you have to get a subscription based one! (unless you fish out one of the scandalous options)

They give you a free 1 month trial, so just signup, try it out for a month then if you don't like it cancel.

I tried it for the free month in the the UK and was very disappointed, their idea of new content is TV shows and movies from 5 years ago, and not many at that. The content, at least in the UK, is seriously lacking.

It really is, to be honest, the only thing tempting me back to it is the Arrested Development series they're getting next year, but I don't really understand why I'm paying it in the meantime, you know what.. I'm off to unsubscribe!

Oh my YES. If you like one-star movies Netflix is for YOU. There are thousands to choose from, like 2012: Ice Age, 2012: Zombie Apocalypse or Apocalypse 2012: The World After Time Ends.

Seriously ? In Canada I get Thor,Water for Elephants,Take Shelter, Jane Eyre (2011) etc etc for "New Arrivals". It seems to be getting better all the time. :D

For $8 a month that seems fine by me. I don't expect something for nothing. Now if I could only get my husband to drop some of the over-priced cable bundles we currently get.....

I am more a arthouse movie watcher than vivid hollywood movies, thus I would love to watch independent movies, some from europe and asia.

It seems netflix is for mass market, not for niche consumers.

@OP if you want the US netflix set up a UK account and use Unblock Us to set your router/xbox settings and netflix will think your in the US and you get a much better deal for your money.

Think unblock Us has a week or 2 week trial, then it costs 5USD a month.
So itll cost you slightly more a month, you can decide if you think its worth spending the extra money on.

Seems you have it better off than us then! Took a quick photo of the default 'new releases' for the UK through the Apple TV today....

Conan The Barbarian - 2011 (a movie that barely made 1m at box office)

It's Always Sunny... - Has been in the 'new releases' for 4 months now

The Devils Double - 2011, Another flop of a movie, didn't show in a lot of cinemas here, went straight to rental

The Office (US) - All but the last TWO seasons, not a 'new' release' been here since I got my Apple TV 4 months ago

Jim Gaffigan, Mr. Universe - newest thing there, Gaffigan is mostly unknown here (as a comic anyway, most people seem to think he's just "oh thats that guy that was in that thing for 5 minutes"), the comedy section is mostly ridiculous anyway, especially the stand-up section, there are about 3 'famous' comedians on there, then a bunch not even good enough to get on b-rate panel shows in the US or UK, oh and some REALLY old Jeff Dunham shows...

Breaking Bad - Fantastic show, one of the best, but again, this has been here for around 4 months now, not a new release (it's not got the latest season either)

Saturday Night Live, The 2010's - When was 2010? Not in 2012 that's for sure!

I'll not list the rest one by one but you get the picture, They don't have every season of Lost for example, that ended ages ago, Ghost World, I owned that on VHS, that is by no means a new release, and I don't know if you see it creeping in there, but Roswell.. Jesus, I forgot that show even existed, it was way back in my puberty years!

So yes, I exaggerated a little before, there are some more 'recent' releases regarding date, but nothing of any substance, even looking for older films you find nothing at all, the comedy section is mostly bad spoofs and worse b... no I can't even grant them b-movie status.

My housemate has about 3 episodes of 24 left to watch on there, but once he's done I'm leaving it in the dust (until the new Arrested Development stuff shows up on there)

Until someone comes along with a fair solution to this problem (and I'd happily pay up to £20 a month for unlimited CURRENT releases and up to date episodes) then I shall continue to obtain my media in ways that nobody profits from, even if I personally don't agree with it 100%... just no better sustainable option right now!

If you have a PS3 (not sure if it's available for other platforms) MUBI is great for indie/cult/arthouse stuff, limited collections, but unlike Netflix, rich in substance!

Thanks for letting me know about mubi. It looks wonderful to my eyes watching indie films and it is also very cheap and i can subscribe with my credit card, but how can i integrate this to apple tv ?

Until a Jailbreak has been released for it I'm afraid you're out of luck there, I thought we'd moved away from the Apple TV talk there as Netflix is what you're limited to with the device at the moment!

I didn't even know there was no way of jailbreaking the ATV3 when I purchased it so now it mostly just sits there as my other macs/ipad all run XBMC!

Sorry for any confusion :)

the final half of season 5 for Breaking Bad for me but that will be number 2

Oh god, I can't wait for that either, the ending of Series 4 had me grinning like an idiot!

I am a big fan of Netflix streaming. You have to keep an eye on the New Release section though. They put big names in for about a months period of time and exchange them. For example Iron Man 2 was in it just before the Avengers movie released now I checked today and Iron Man 2 cannot be found but Thor is available.

I noticed the same thing a while back. Tangled and The Princess and the Frog were there and then a few months later I went back to try to watch and they were gone.

What it is best for is TV Seasons. If you ask me more shows should do it. We watched all seasons (except most recent) of Mad Men & Breaking Bad. We then purchased the most recent season of each from iTunes (SD versions of $22 USD) and now we are all caught up for the newest season.
