About Notifications

Can someone please explain to me how to set up notifications in system preferences? I don't understand when to use "banners" and when to use "alerts and what is the main difference between the two. I have mail and facetime set to use "banners." Is that the best way? Okay I just got an email and it showed up as a banner, but how does it show up as an alert. Bear with this old timer and explain in detail.

Only real difference is for Alerts, you have to click a button to get rid of it. Think the old style of notifications on iOS pre Notification Center.

Okay madsci954, thanks for the reply. So I assume it's best to leave it on "banners" then. 

I think it defaults Alerts for Calendar events and Reminders and Banners for everything else. That's what I have mine set at.
