the title says it all...there's a 20gig 3g ipod for £150 ($280), £30 less than a new 5G from amazon! its way overpriced i know but its from the refurb store so comes with the warenty etc!

should i go for it or not? and please vote...crazy or sane!!!!!!

Get the 5G, you get an extra 10Gb, it's smaller and lighter, it sounds better, the battery lasts longer, the screen is bigger , brighter and clearer and you can watch movies on it (if you really want).

I'd never swap my 5G for my old 3G, but it did take me a while to get used to the looks.

For comparison's sake, I just sold a 15gb 3rd gen for ~$95 in cash and trade to someone on these boards, and it wasn't even that easy. Sure it didn't come with a warranty, and it had slightly less capacity, but I was also told by the buyer that he hadn't seen one that looked that nice outside of a brand-new one (so you know I took care of it). Granted, I don't know much about UK pricing, but it sure seems like a bad deal to me!

For that £30 you get a much better player.

Better Battery (6 hours more i believe)
Bigger Screen with photo and movie capability
10 GB more space
Thinner (nicer)
Extra and improved software (eg world clock, stopwatch, screen lock)

GET THE 5G!

ok so heres some extra thought:

the 3G was the model i really wanted a few years back, however i couldn't go for it because my computer had no firewire, was usb 1.1 and was running windows 98. By the time i upgraded to something that i could use an ipod on (my powerbook), you couldn't buy the 3G's new anymore.

Now i have already bought 2 3G models but they aren't in good shape, although i got them cheap, and i have a 4G Colour. So the purchase of the 3G would not be practical but to satisfy this long desire for my own 'pod, as opposed to the ones i have bought second hand.

Also, i will most likely get the 12in powerbook replacement (be it mbp or macbook), in the fall, and intend to take advantage of cram and jam (if it is running), and so will be able to get a 5G then.

So there is a sentimental element behind the purchase, and i am at ends whether to get it or not. Part of me says get it, as you've always wanted a brand new one, while the other (more rational) side of me tells me i am stupid to be thinking about this!

It's entirely up to you at the end of the day, my first ipod was a 3G and i did love it, but i have found that i do prefer the 5G.

If the poll doesn't change your mind...

The 3rd Gen ipods are the best looking iPods ever. The 4th and 5th gen models have gone way down hill. I must say that the 4th and 5th gen ipod's track pad owns the 3rd gen's button setup. I must say I did love my 3rd gen ipod (mine was stolen). My 4th gen is nowhere near as cool. Oh well.
