I'm getting real close to purchasing my first Mac desktop now. I've decided to go with the Power Mac and was wondering if this configuration is good. I was also thinking if it would be better just to wait off until the Intel Power Macs come out so I don't feel like I've wasted money on buying a PPC mac later if Intel macs are just around the corner.

Here's my Power Mac's configuration:

Power Mac G5 Dual-core 2GHz
512MB 533 DDR2 Non ECC SDRAM - 2x256
NVIDIA GeForce 6600 256MB SDRAM (Upgraded)
AirPort Extreme + Bluetooth built-in (Upgraded)
2GHz Dual-core PowerPC G5
250GB Serial ATA - 7200rpm (Upgraded)
16x SuperDrive double-layer (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)

Total: $2,001 (w/ Educational discounts)

Does this seem good or is there anything else I should change? And, when would this arrive? I've seen some other people with their estimated ship date at around December or later. I'm not sure if it's becouse Apple is out of stock with the 7800's or if it's only their Quads.

You want 1 or 1.5Gb RAM to get the most from your G5. Despite most saying don't buy RAM from Apple because it's too expensive I got my dealer to put in the ram (Educ reduces the premium a bit)

Peace of mind for me - it's Apple certified RAM & covered under Applecare warranty. I use the PowerMac for event video production so an ounce of prevention worth a pound of cure esp. reading some of the woes a minority have on the Apple discussion boards trying to sort out flakey hardware.

Forgot to mention that I will be purchasing my RAM upgrade later. It will be 2GB(2x1GB) PC2-4200 Crucial RAM for ~$200 at http://www.NewEgg.com.

looks good to me. i purchased the stock model at the apple store. i will upgrade the video card later when the ones that are out right now get cheaper. i have 2gb of ram that i borrowed from my work that came out of some dell gx620's. works great!

the only thing i want is the bluetooth/airport module and i am still waiting to see if apple will release that as a user installable part. does anyone know anything about this that i don't?

I think the BT module might be integrated onto the main board just like the iBook, so it's not upgradeable.

unfortunately, that is not confirmed. i've read both what your saying but i have also read other users stating apple has told them the module will be released in the near future as a user installable part.

nobody knows yet i guess...

G5's are AWSOME! Unfortunatly, I dont have the new QUAD G5 (Dual-Core) I have a dual 2GHz I purchased a year ago. I never had any problems. If you plan to do any editing, a lot of editing for video G5 is the best bet.
