So my four month old MBP has always had whine and heat issues. I realize that the heat is "within spec" and I can live with that. My problem is the whine. It drives me crazy. I now have to wear my quietcomfort 2s just to work at my computer, even if I am not listening to music! If I use my computer for long periods of time I get a headache, and my mother (I am 16 and live at home) can't come into my room because it hurts her ears (this is arguably a good thing but I am not going to tell the AC person than :D ).

Anyway, my problem is that when plugged in there is a quiet but extremely high pitched whining, and when running on battery there is a louder, lower-pitched buzzing. I am going to call into AC as soon as my aforementioned mother gets off the phone. My question is, does anyone have any tips for dealing with AC? I plan on not letting the rep in on how I know it is a widespread problem and simply say "Ah my ears!" and what I have told you already. Do you think that is enough? I have never called AC before (this is my first mac), and my previous experiances have been with dell over a much more blatant issue (dead HDD). Tips? Tricks? Anything?

Don't give up. If they try to tell you it's not covered, tell them how ridiculus it is that a pro machine can be so unusable and if you need to, ask to speak to customer relations rather than just the applecare person. If you are persistent they will listen to you.

I called applecare yesterday about my macbook staining problem and the mooing. They told me the mooing can be fixed by installing the latest firmware, but to the best of my knowledge it does not exist. lol

Well I called and they are sending a box. The woman on the other end was very nice, but I definatley knew more about macs than she did, which may have been a good thing is this situation. You should call back and tell them the SMC firmwear did nothing (it didn't for me) and hopefully they'll help you out. Just stress that it inhibits your work and act like you are the first person you have heard of with this issue and with any luck you too, will be getting a box.

Oh, I got a box in today for the staining. I was thinking about writing a little note and sticking it in the box making sure that they change all of the plastic ie palm area and area around the screen. Maybe I will call applecare again and mention the mooing to them since I am not sure if they can fix something I didnt complain about.

I kept hearing about the whine in the MBP forever. I have a Rev A, and I had the heat and dim screen problems, but only yesterday did it start to whine so loud that I literally can't take it anymore.

First I went in about the heat. They didn't give a ****.

Then the battery was toasted. They gave me a new one.

This will be my third trip to the apple store over this computer.

I was talking about the firmware in general...I assumed that there was a more recent version of the MB's firware but I can't find it either. With any luck they'll fix the mooing too but you definatley want to call back in to make sure the complaint is attached to your serial #. I was just going to make myself a wallpaper that says "Make my computer shut the f*** up!" I figure the techs will apreciate the humor. Or maybe not, but I'll think its funny. :D
