i'm going to be using this in a very consumer way -- no heavy video editing (although i will be editing HD home movies)

i am about to pull the trigger on the 24" 2.8ghz iMac (my first Mac!) simply because it's a lot cheaper than the new updates

any reason why i should jump at the chance to pick up the new video card?

i will be upgrading the RAM to 4gigs after i get it

if i'm editing HD home movies and exporting them to iTunes for my AppleTV, am i going to wish i had the more powerful graphics card?

i'm coming from a pentium4, 2.66ghz, 1gig RAM machine that's 4 years old . . .

Get the 24" refurb, you will never be sorry

Get the new one with the 8800, 256 bit and 512 mb are simply standart for 1920 x 1200 and you still will be happy with your mac in years.

Yesterday, this iMac was the best iMac available. If someone told you that you could get it a couple hundreds $ off that day, would you have bought it then?

It's a great machine with great specs. They should suit you very well and there really isn't any reason to get the new one with the tasks you say your going to do. You'll be happy for years!

If I didn't already have a brand new 24" Dell Monitor, I would have definitely gotten the iMac when I bought my first mac last friday!

Save your money and use that saved money on OWC ram and maybe a external harddrive.

i pulled the trigger and i'm pumped! now i have to make sure all my music, pictures, etc. get transferred correctly

i've been building this iTunes library for years and i don't want to mess up the playlists. . .

Good point! don't buy it because it is the newest unless you actually need the top specs. You can use the extra $700 you saved to buy extra ram, an external or an hard drive. heck, you can even buy a new hd camcorder haha.

The 24" imac is a very very nice machine yotoad. I hope you enjoy which i'm sure you will! If i wasn't going to university and need a laptop, i would get the imac too!

my new sanyo xacti hd1000 is the main reason i needed a new computer -- my old pc is a great machine, no complaints really. the processing power and video struggles were enough for me to think about a new computer for hd home movie editing

the iMac just made sense for me to get as a home machine and to make "the switch" -- can't wait for it to be delivered!

All comes down to whether or not you NEED the upgraded graphics card. The speed increase is more trivial. I gave it some thought and decided to go for the new all-singing-all-dancing 3.06 GHz model mainly because I'll be using it for the next 3-4 years. The graphics card was the final decider.

The refurb price in the UK was not so attractive anyway. A saving of only £190 for which you get a slightly slower used computer with an outdated graphics card. Buying new also gave me the chance to upgrade the hard disk to 750 MB for £60. If the refurbs had been £300+ cheaper it would have been a much closer call.
