About to receive SR MBP - reinstall OS first?

Hi,

I have heard people mention that Tiger takes up a lot of disk space and so many people re-install as soon as they get their machine. Is this the case or have I misunderstood?

Is it easy to do? Does the OS installer format the disk first etc? Im used to Windows not OSX...

I'm undecided as to whether i wanna do this or not. I figure 160GB is fairly large so I should have tons of space on arrival.

As for a reinstall, all you do is put the disc in, double click Install OS X, and there are simple instructions from there. You CAN format before reinstall if you choose to.

I'm guessing that the reason behind that would be so you could customize the install. Right? That's the only logical reason I could come up with anyway.
But if you're new to the OS, it would seem that this would not be a wise choice since you would not know what to select and what not to.

So my advice would be not to do it. I don't see the point.

It's always been a tradition ... when ever I get a new mac I reinstall the OS. I had a 12" PB that had issues when I first got it and reinstalling the OS fixed it. Also I can install it without all the printer drivers and I don't install iWeb ... few things like that. (why is there over a gig of printer drivers anyway! Crazy!)

I was tempted to do that but found it really unnecessary, so now Im just going to wait until Leopard comes out and do it then. One clean install is enough for me to do this year after all the other Windows machines I have to fix!!!

No, there's no need to reinstall the OS. It's just a waste of time.

Just drag the pre-installed apps you don't want to the trash.

If you're not using using Garageband, delete the support files from "/Library/Application Support/GarageBand" and from "/Library/Audio/Apple Loops/Apple/Apple Loops for GarageBand"

If you're not using iDVD or iMovie remove the "/Library/Application Support/iDVD" and "/Library/Application Support/iMovie" folders.

Download Monolingual and remove unused languages.

Remove unused printer drivers from /Library/Printers

You can always reinstall any apps or printer drivers from the install DVD at any time if you need them.

It'll only take you 10 minutes to do this, most of the time taken to download and install Monolingual, compared to an hour or two to reinstall the OS.

installing OSX only takes about 15 minutes if you dont install all of the crap, ilife does take an extra 15 mintues but if you have to install ilife 08 AFTER then its not that big of a deal...

my gf just got a macbook with over 16gb os files installed when shipped, so i convinced her to let me reinstall the os. down to about 6gb os files
