I have 2.1 right now. I want to get 3.0.

I've used winterboard to change my background, and I heard that it's best to uninstall all cydia apps. But honestly, does it really matter? Installing a new firmware would just wipe out the whole thing anyway right?

Also, is there a way to save my text messages and everything?

Just remove any apps out of categories, and then do DFU restore to 3.0, and make sure to set it up as a new phone to avoid any possible problems. Yes you'll lose your sms, but you'll soon get over it.

I thought I read something that you can save the sms by ssh.

So when you say categories, are you talking about the Cydia app Categories? And when you say DFU restore, are you saying hold some buttons and brick the iPhone? Couldn't I just do a full restore using redSn0w? Or does redSn0w put the iPhone in DFU mode with all those instructions?
