I'm going to upgrade the firmware because the apps slow my phone down and I really only want to use it to tether but the tethering system doesnt work that great.

So I want to upgrade my firmware, I know I'll lose all my apps but is there anything special I need to do?

Thanks:apple:

Instead of updating it in iTunes, you should restore it. So click the restore button, and then use the backup your computer made to put all your preferences and changes (minus anything to do with jailbreak) back on your iPhone.

So if I have a JB 1.1.1 iPhone, all I need to worry about is no 3rd party apps if I "restore" to 1.1.3? The phone should still be able to make calls, surf the net etc? I'm in Canada and not on AT&T so I wanted to check. Any other consequences I should know about before doing this? I really want the new GPS locator.

Restoring restores your phone to its pre-jailbreak state. Just sync, then restore, then upgrade...

Yipes - don't go to 1.1.3 !!! You'll brick your phone big time.

So if one DOES have AT&T and wants to go to stock with 1.1.3, why can't we just do the software update? What would happen? If a restore is done, aren't all the photos for contacts, etc. lost? I doubt my husband has a backup for all this stuff.

If you have AT&T, feel free to update if you do not want 3rd party apps. Nothing will happen. But everytime you sync your phone, no only is it putting info onto your phone, but it is backing everything up like: text messages, calendar, photos, stocks, weather, clock, notes, settings, phone, bookmarks, and songs.
