I'm looking for a good RPG for Mac, and I'm having troubles finding some good ones. Any suggestions?

I am looking for something that is not a subscription, like WoW.

Help would STRONGLY be appreciated. Thanks.

Star Wars: KOTOR

This is what Kanye had to say...

“Yo Rodus, I’m really happy for you, I’ll let you finish, but Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic is one of the best RPG's of all time. One of the best RPG's of all time!”

fable: the lost chapters is a pretty amazing game. Everything you do affects your future/ personality kinda cool..graphics are awesome too.

I'll have to agree with Cougarcat, BG is a lot more enjoyable than NWN. NWN is too much hack 'n slash, and the limitation of not having a party also contribute to ruining the whole RPG feel imo.

BTW, you can actually play BG1 using the BG2 engine, look up BGtutu or BGT for mac. Also, you'll probably encounter some bugs in BG 1 & 2 (especially if using tutu/BGT), but these can be fixed, just look up solutions on the internet. Also, if your savegame somehow gets corrupted (which sometimes happens) you can use a java application to fix them. I'm actually in the middle of BG1 (BGT) just now, and after struggling with bugs for a while, I've managed to sort them all out and now it runs flawlessly.

You get what you pay for...

Yep. And with WoW you get constantly upgraded content, a responsive tech/customer support staff, and a pretty solid gaming experience overall.

$15.00 a month is really not a lot for the amount of work Blizzard puts into the game, balancing gameplay, adding content, and resolving issues as they come up. It's also a MASSIVE RPG.

I mean, not trying to convert you or anything, but it's worth taking a look at.

However I admit some RPG purists don't care for it. :)

That would be me! :D

My bottom line on Oblivion is this great fun, loads of open and beautiful spaces, some really creative stuff (Brotherhood, Impressionist Painting, etc) mixed in with some otherwise dreadful writing ...

BUT ... it has an absolutely broken leveling system, and if you consider 'choices & consequences' or 'picking *A* character class' as a foundation of modern RPG's, it is hard to describe Oblivion as anything but 'fun sandbox console action game with RPG-lite elements'.

That said, I still recommend it to everyone!

As for Mac stuff ...
- Eschelon Book 1 (Book 2 coming soon) as mentioned
- Litany of Bioware games as mentioned (BG, NWN, KotOR)
- Also Bioware, Jade Empire. Bought this for Mac recently and it works great ... not cheap though.
- More Black Isle - Icewind Dale. Great party based combat-centric turn-based RPG with a great soundtrack to boot!
- Fable - as a RPG it is *very* short (I finished it in ~12 hours, shorter than many FPS games), and the 'organic world' is a thin veneer, but it is fun if you can get it cheap.
- Deus Ex - FPS/RPG hybrid, still quite fun.

As for WoW ... all I will say is that MMO's are pretty much a different genre than standard RPG's. I have tried them repeatedly but really have never clicked wit them. It is a personal preference thing.

If it doesn't have to be an online game, and if you don't mind playing an Indie title, have a look at that little company:

http://basiliskgames.com

I second this recommendation. While the game did appear to consume a fair amount of CPU / GPU resources (than I would expect) and the UI did have some minor issues, I thought the storyline and overall game play was quite good.

I will also buy Book II once it is released.

I remember really enjoying Summoner. Not sure how it plays on newer macs (played it on my G3 laptop). Single player RPG, where you build a party of up to 3 or 4. 3D world. Very fun.

If you don't mind text based and would like MMO without the charge then Iron Realms has some great stuff and there is a new Raymond E Feist MMO (text again) starting up soon. These are great if you want a true, human occupied world experience but don't want to pay.

Oblivion leveling, you can get in over your head if you don't level correctly. I've seen it. And I admit I am really drawn to wide open RPG spaces. Nope it's not perfect. :)

RPGs you can beat. WoW just goes on and on. If you don't mind running the same dungeons repeatedly for better gear, all is good. On my second time playing, after about 10 months, I hit my second wall and am taking a bit of a break. How long exactly? I don't know. The absolute best gaming situation would be a coop RPG, because there, you can really change the world while interacting with real party members which is the biggest attraction of MMOs, social interaction. Is WoW good? It's the best escapism you can find for the money. But playing it long term boils down to individual tolerances.

In Oblivion and Fallout 3 you can max out all your skills and characteristics in a single playthrough - thief warrior mage preist. Lame, but fun.

Talking about BG2, does anyone else have a pathfinding bug occur frequently? My characters almost seem glued in place and I will have to click a VERY short distance in front of my characters to have them move at all. Enemy NPCs won't be able to move either.

Every time this happens I'm forced to save and restart the game. Very annoying.

I would not reccomend WoW at all anyway. Its pretty bad right now. Its mostly just elitest players. I played as a new player and it was not fun at all. people there dont like new people AT ALL. no experience? we dont want you. dont have 9,876,765,41 gear score. sorry we dont want you. its pretty lame overall.

Only the first 30 levels are fun. after that its just grinding until you can get high enough to be rejected from groups because your gear score isnt high enough.

Dont get me wrong, i think it would be fun if you have played it along time and have a good guild. As a new player though it sucks hard. with no keys and no real experience nobody wants to deal with all that anymore.

Oblivion is pretty good. especially because of all the mods.

I used to play WoW though, so I'm about ~ Level 40. You're right though, at that point you don't really "fit in." :)

"mostly elitist players"? Maybe that was your experience, but I disagree if this is supposed to be a blanket analysis of typical players. When you are new, you'll usually run into other players to group with. They will be good, bad, friendly, generous, selfish, just as with any game. And they won't be asking your gear rating because it is just not a factor at that point in the game. Even in the leveling instances, gear is not normally a factor. Say Zul Farek, a level 42 instance in Tanaris. Virtually anyone can do well or at least survive in a group running this dungeon. Knowing how to play your class is more important. However gear becomes a big factor in the end game dungeons.

I ran into troubles being under-geared in the end game environment (level 80) which proves you just can't waltz through the game and hope to pick up adequate gear to be proficient in end-game dungeons. It does take a little study at the thousands of WoW sites that tell you what kind of gear and where to find the gear your class needs. And you can check out the MacRumors WoW Guide. Lots of links there for good Wow reading.

However I want to reemphasis, unless you are playing with a bunch of hardcore jerkoffs, being proficient with your class skills is more important than gear while you are leveling. The one exception to this might be if you want to tank. Tanks have more pressure on them and like the pitcher on a baseball team, if they fail, the group fails.

And as far as the grinding comment, what MMO out there other than exclusively PVP does not have grinding? Anyway PVP is just a different kind of grind. ;)

I love Oblivion on PC. :)

I restarted playing WoW in Nov08 (now retired for the second time) and was surprised at how many people are running alts up through the levels (on Dalaran). And there are good guilds out there with friendly peeps to help you along. Not to say there are no ******s, but what game won't you find them? :)

Translation: My equipment is not good enough for the instance / raid in WoW and I expect you to take me along and carry me through the run. With an attitude like that, I don't blame them :).
