Hey all,

I've got two machines right now. My personal iMac that I also use for work, and a work issued 13" MBP. My iMac was purchased in fall 2016 so it's not old really at all. I've found that the iMac is absolutely crazy slow. I'm a software engineer, but develop for the web so my tools and usage aren't too intensive.

My machines:
Late 2015 27" iMac
Processor: 3.2 GHz Quad Core i5
Memory: 8GB DDR3
HDD: 1TB Fusion
GPU: AMD Radeon R9 M390 2048 MB
OS: Sierra 10.12.3


Early 2015 13" MBP
Processor: 2.7 GHz Dual Core i5
Memory: 8GB DDR3
HDD: 256 SSD
GPU: Intel Iris Graphics 6100 1536 MB
OS: El Capitan 10.11.6

My daily usage:
- Chrome
- Vagrant boxes ( usually a single vagrant box running )
- Spotify
- Slack
- Tweetbot
- Plex server ( rarely has transcoding sessions running )
- Backblaze ( schedule to backup from midnight to 7am)

Some clear visible examples of slowness are simply launching simple apps like Spotify or mail. I launch it and wait up to 5-10 minutes before some of my GUI fully loads. My work machine I do all of the above daily usages and everything is instantaneous.

I'm wondering if I should:

A) Try an erase-and-install
B) Take this into the genius bar

I'm dreading both options since this machine is so heavily used. I consider myself fairly intelligent, I write code and have worked Apple retail for a few years as well. But right now I'm actually clueless as to why the speed is so vastly different when the hardware appears to be a decent bump.

I have another user account on the iMac and I logged into that one. My wife only has Origin installed for games and of course any share applications I installed. She has no documents or extra plugins/services running.

Booting up her account was incredibly slow, I actually received the beachball while opening the Finder window for the Applications directory. I attempted to launch Spotify but it didn't even show up in the dock before I gave up and switched accounts to get back to work.

Hard drive space left:
The 1TB fusion drive currently has 704.88 GB free.

Safe Mode: The results were slower than my normal account, with additional graphics issues

UPDATE:
Since my Apple store visit I've performed and erase and install without restoring from backup. This seems to have fixed the issue for now. I'm easing into my first week of routine work usage. If I see issues arise I will be making another Genius Bar appointment.

The 1TB Fusion drive only has a paltry 24GB SSD, so with what you're doing, it's likely almost exclusively running off the considerably slower 5400RPM drive, whilst your 13" has pure Flash storage.

You can run SMART Utility to check that the drive isn't failing. Anything other than Passed would indicate it is:https://cloudfront.volitans-software.com/smartutility323.zip

Even if the drive's OK, the performance difference between an SSD (even a SATA one, not PCI-e) and a 5400RPM drive is night and day. So I would look to replace that drive with an SSD. Possibly Apple could do that for you.

Thanks I'll definitely check this utility out. I figured this was the only grey area between to the two machines worth investigating but didn't think it'd be this much of an impact. Will look into this an update any findings.
 
The huge slowdowns that you report should not be the fault of a (properly working) fusion drive.
I suspect that the spinning hard drive portion may be failing. Keep a good backup if you keep important stuff on your iMac.

If you purchased that new last fall, then you should be good for a warranty repair (if that becomes needed)
If you have worked Apple retail, you would know that Apple probably won't allow for upgrading the storage during a warranty repair (such as swapping out the fusion for full SSD), so it's possible that warranty may not be an issue for you.
You could see a significant improvement by using a USB 3.0 external drive w/SSD as your boot system. It's a good solution for an iMac. The external can be "velcro-ed" out of sight behind the iMac

Fortunately all of my work is backed up with version control and the rest of my personal documents are backed up locally with a carbon copy clone with the addition of Backblaze syncing. So I feel relatively safe in this front.

While I do have a twelvesouth backpack, I feel this is hacky and one the main reasons why I chose to spend the $2k+ on this machine. The backpack right now is loaded up with externals for my Plex library and extra backups. I'd like to try and not have to use an external as a primary boot drive. Starts to feel like a linux setup then haha.

The external boot drive is just an option for you, making it simple to just plug in, install/transfer your system and files.
Some folks are not particularly comfortable with slicing open a thin iMac just to replace the internal storage.

I have not used EtreCheck, preferring Drive Dx, and I think that slow is no doubt correct. Would not run a 27" iMac without 16GB of memory. The last few operating systems are hungry beasts and handle allocation of memory differently. Druing the next slowdown I would go into Activity Monitor and see what is using it all up.
 
As I mentioned before I plan on upgrading the RAM later this year. My thought process is that the iMac should perform at least on the same level as my 13" MBP and it's far far worse.

One thing I did completely over look in documenting this thread is the OS versions which you brought to my attention.

I've got two machines right now. My personal iMac that I also use for work, and a work issued 13" MBP. My iMac was purchased in fall 2016 so it's not old really at all. I've found that the iMac is absolutely crazy slow. I'm a software engineer, but develop for the web so my tools and usage aren't too intensive.

My machines:
Late 2015 27" iMac
Processor: 3.2 GHz Quad Core i5
Memory: 8GB DDR3
HDD: 1TB Fusion
GPU: AMD Radeon R9 M390 2048 MB
OS: Sierra 10.12.3


Early 2015 13" MBP
Processor: 2.7 GHz Dual Core i5
Memory: 8GB DDR3
HDD: 256 SSD
GPU: Intel Iris Graphics 6100 1536 MB
OS: El Capitan 10.11.6

My daily usage:
- Chrome
- Vagrant boxes ( usually a single vagrant box running )
- Spotify
- Slack
- Tweetbot
- Plex server ( rarely has transcoding sessions running )
- Backblaze ( schedule to backup from midnight to 7am)

Some clear visible examples of slowness are simply launching simple apps like Spotify or mail. I launch it and wait up to 5-10 minutes before some of my GUI fully loads. My work machine I do all of the above daily usages and everything is instantaneous.

I'm wondering if I should:

A) Try an erase-and-install
B) Take this into the genius bar

I'm dreading both options since this machine is so heavily used. I consider myself fairly intelligent, I write code and have worked Apple retail for a few years as well. But right now I'm actually clueless as to why the speed is so vastly different when the hardware appears to be a decent bump.

I have another user account on the iMac and I logged into that one. My wife only has Origin installed for games and of course any share applications I installed. She has no documents or extra plugins/services running.

Booting up her account was incredibly slow, I actually received the beachball while opening the Finder window for the Applications directory. I attempted to launch Spotify but it didn't even show up in the dock before I gave up and switched accounts to get back to work.

Hard drive space left:
The 1TB fusion drive currently has 704.88 GB free.

Maybe it's bc there needs to be an SSD for faster speeds? I've got an SSD in my late 2013 rMBP and it works great.
 
Thanks I'll definitely check this utility out. I figured this was the only grey area between to the two machines worth investigating but didn't think it'd be this much of an impact. Will look into this an update any findings.

Sorry if I missed this. Did you have an opportunity to run SMART Utility? It'll only take a minute to do.

There is probably an hardware failure ...
There is no reason for such a machine to be so slow.
 
It seems like you have endless apps and processes set to launch on startup this is slowing your system down maybe you could turn some of them off 8gb should be able to run a huge amount of apps. Check your ram usage in activity monitor and close those things using vast amounts of ram.

It could still be your hard drive dying that is slowing everything down I assume you have used disk utility and repaired the disk?? This may just be a registry problem.
 
Minutes to open an app is absolutely not right. We run El Cap on a 2009 iMac with 8 Gb, and even before we replaced the original disk drive it was fine, if not hair-on-fire fast.

Is it slow as soon as you log in? Run Activity Monitor and then open an app. Do it a couple times watching both CPU and memory. Try turning off background apps like Backblaze and Plex. If you're still seeing very slow response with nothing else running, that would suggest hardware. If you can get the machine into a state where it responds well, it's probably something you're running. I'll second ApfelKuchen's suggestions: try a safe mode or recovery mode boot, try creating a different user without your usual startup items.
 
There's plenty that can be done to isolate potential causes without a trip to the Apple Store.

Safe Mode

OP > I have not seen you mention if you tried safe mode yet as @ApfelKuchen suggested. Reboot while holding the shift key. That will start in safe mode and it will stop all those third party utilities and apps you have running (you have a lot) and eliminate that as the issue. If you still have the glacial app launch times in safe mode, then you have a hardware failure of some sort (likely a bad drive) and you will need to take it in for repair.

The huge slowdowns that you report should not be the fault of a (properly working) fusion drive.
I suspect that the spinning hard drive portion may be failing. Keep a good backup if you keep important stuff on your iMac.

If you purchased that new last fall, then you should be good for a warranty repair (if that becomes needed)
If you have worked Apple retail, you would know that Apple probably won't allow for upgrading the storage during a warranty repair (such as swapping out the fusion for full SSD), so it's possible that warranty may not be an issue for you.
You could see a significant improvement by using a USB 3.0 external drive w/SSD as your boot system. It's a good solution for an iMac. The external can be "velcro-ed" out of sight behind the iMac

The flash portion of the SSD could easily be the issue. I have a 240GB SSD paired to the 5400RPM 1TB drive my 2012 Mac Mini came with. That drive has 10 times to storage space on SSD and it sometimes works from the 5400RPM drive.

Apple as far as I know would only void your warranty if a non-certified tech works on your machine. Confirm this with an Apple certified technician or a company with them, but from what I understand their work doesn't void the warranty.

OP, I would suggest saving your money for a replacement to the PCIe drive and get one as large as you can afford and then while you're at it swap out the 1TB with either a large SATA3 SSD or a larger, preferably 7200RPM drive and have yourself a much better fusion drive.
 
Apple will not "swap" an internal HDD for an SSD. Not going to happen.

I've read (over at Macintouch.com, I believe) that Spotify can consume ENORMOUS amounts of CPU and disk usage because it's constantly updating its "database", or something along that order. I don't use it and won't touch it.

Seems I've also read reports of Chrome using excessive CPU.

I would reckon a constant connection to BackBlaze isn't helping, either.
Nor does PLEX. It's using up CPU (and probably RAM as well, forcing disk swapping to increase).

Also, Samuelsan makes a good point about having too many apps set to load at startup.
My advice is to REMOVE THEM ALL, and startup only "to the finder".
Then, and ONLY THEN, open apps as needed.

By loading all these apps at startup, the OS will start writing/reading to disk excessively, as the VM swap goes into overdrive. With nothing but a 24gb SSD portion, my guess is that this will quickly be overwhelmed, and now VM swap is "going to the HDD", or perhaps even partially to SSD, and partially to HDD.

More thoughts:

Create a NEW, temporary, completely "empty" account.
DON'T set it up to load any apps at startup.
DISABLE Spotify, PLEX, and BackBlaze for that account.
Boot it up, test it.
Any difference?

You said you have a CCC cloned backup?
Do you have that backup close-at-hand?
Have you tried connecting the CCC backup and BOOTING FROM IT?
If you do this, what happens?

Before you try anything else, try booting from your CCC backup, observe what happens, and report back here.

Also, the iMac can run El Capitan.
You might consider "going back" to El Capitan and seeing how that does.
Or -- do a "test install" of El Cap to an external drive, and boot from that, to see how it does.

The short of it is -- you're trying to do too much at once.
Slim and trim things down, and I'll guarantee you that performance will increase...

I did this earlier this morning. Safe mode actually ran worse with lots of GPU oddities, which seem to be deemed normal. I am on bad wifi right now but will post links to both screencaptures I did, one on my normal user and one in safe mode. Both are a couple min long and neither fully load Spotify.

I don't think I've ever mentioned that I think Apple will swap out my hd for an SSD, I wouldn't expect them to do that. Though working for Apple in the past, for very disgruntle customers some nice complimentary services were done as a "surprise and delight." This usually was full refunds, swaps out of warranty etc, never really a free upgrade.

I did boot up Activity Monitor and checked the CPU tab and noticed Plex was high on the list, which was surprising because nothing in the house had an active streaming session. Chrome is a hog and so is Spotify.

I guess my main argument is though is that; this machine is, out-of-box, suppose to handle this. My iPhone 7+ is blazing fast compared to my $2k+ 5k iMac. Normal slowness doing very intensive processes is to be expected. I don't expect this to be the fastest machine out there, but basic everyday tasks are painfully slow.

Unfortunately I haven't kept my CCC up-to-date, since most of my work is "in the cloud" and backblaze does it's thing it's lower on the priority list. Though I think I'm starting to run out of debugging I think I'll try your suggestions, I just will need to set aside time - maybe a weekend.

Safe mode stops all those third party apps and utilities from running, so if you still see this issue in safe mode I believe you have a failed drive and no amount of fussing around and reinstalling things is going to fix it.

Yes safe mode disables graphics acceleration, so some video weirdness is to be expected.

I'm probably going to bring this into the genius bar. This unfortunately is one of those issues that's going to be a lot of headache since it's not a straightforward error. I know there are admin tools they have that hit hardware hard consistently and give more detailed readouts, but I fear I'll still end up with an erase and installed Mac.

Any recommendations as I plan to head in?

I really think that is your best bet and you will just be spinning your wheels here otherwise.

Just make a Time Machine backup so you can restore everything after they fix it.

Etrecheck shows both the Flash and HDD portions of Fusion drive are active. Even if it was inactive, this system is running significantly slower than an all-HDD machine should work, so why think that replacing the Flash would be a likely fix?

An OS doesn't kill processes due to inadequate mass storage, it kills them due to inadequate RAM.

You clearly believe that 24GB Flash is inadequate for a Fusion drive, but this is not the performance of a system that's primarily or entirely running off a 5400 RPM HDD, it's substantially worse. You may want to see other people do as you have done, and throw a huge SSD into a Fusion drive (I'll refrain from debating that here), but based on what we're seeing here, it's very unlikely that it would fix this problem.
