Yes, this has been done before. Yes, this can be searched for. But don't give me any of the "Catch 22" nonsense of opinion threads. Old threads are outdated and irrelevant, people flame you for "necro bumping". So let's just start fresh in 2015.

Here's the idea. You know some games that are free that you return to during breaks/gaming times. You would like certain types of games. So post what you play, what it's like, why it's not bad of a "freemium" and what you're looking for. I'll start.

My "free" games on Mac:
DOTA 2 - All characters are unlocked, MOBA game. Not "pay 2 win" but has a steep learning curve. UI is somewhat cluttered compared to League. Wide range of graphic options.
League of Legends - MOBA game. Characters have to be bought with Riot Points ($$$) or IP (Game reward) but only character skins require RP, all characters can be bought with IP. Constant updates for balance purposes. I barely started playing last year in January and I actually enjoy it and I'm a tough sell for F2P games. Their matchmaking system is pretty amazing.
Hearthstone - Card collecting game. Digital simplified type of Magic the Gathering game. VERY pay 2 win. To a fault. Some people unlock extremely powerful legendary cards on their first free pack. Most others get crap cards and get steamrolled by players with elite decks. I don't recommend this game unless you have a deep wallet and are okay with losing OFTEN.

My "free" games on PC:
Neverwinter - I actually enjoy this MMO. I've never had a situation where I feel like paying money would offer some kind of game changing element. It's a lot more fun with friends (maybe a MacRumors guild?) but the graphics and play style are more action oriented. There's auto attack speeds and skills don't make a huge difference but it gives you the feel of being in control.

What I'm looking for:
GTA style game - I'll probably buy GTA 5 when it comes out but until I finish building my eGPU, it'll play like crap on my Intel Iris 5100.
Free MMO on OS X - I hate using Boot Camp to play games. I would like a premium style MMO that's on OS X.

Can't help with GTA... still looking myself.

A truly free premium MMO might be hard to find. If you are OK with buy-to-play though I can recommend Guild Wars 2 (not on the 5100 though) and Elder Scrolls Online.

I used to play World of Tanks (PC only I believe) and War Thunder (Apple native as well as PC) both are great fun and not pay to win, although you CAN spend a bucket load of cash on them as my credit card found out ;)

I can't say there's much out there that's free and actually worth the time and offers a unique and compelling experience.

People need to be paid for their work you know. ;)

I would suggest GW2 as the other poster did. It's certainly worth the box price for the content and length of time you can spend with it. If you're searching for an open world experience (you mention GTA) then you may just need to bite the bullet, install bootcamp, and pony up the cash for Skyrim if you haven't done so already. There really isn't anything better as a single player, open world rpg experience goes and given the number of mods available makes it is highly re-playable.

Sleeping Dogs is very much in the spirit of GTA though better in some respects, voice acting, story and setting were of interest to me while playing. Other titles like Arkham City and Deus Ex: Human Revolution would seem complimentary to your interests as well.

I go through my massive backlog of games that I've already paid for and pick something to play from there.

Me on the other hand did enjoy Sleeping Dogs in the beginning but then the whole thing turned me off of whatever reason, I didn't like the protagonist much he's kind of "fake" to me. Not to mention a lot of repetitiveness (still less than Saints Row games).

As for free games, I just got into Hearthstone and got around fine with the basic cards you get when you get a Hero to level 10. Maybe try net-decking it?

Another free game I play a lot is SimCity Buildit, which is surprisingly good. There's a lot to learn about making money, and pretty balance overall. Not competitive but not really pay-to-win either.

Team Fortress 2.

Still free. Still great. Still has hats. Cosmetic stuff, keys for random item crates, and weapons you will find a billion of anyway are the only things you can buy.
