iOS Accelerometer Measurement

Hey guys, I have two questions.

1. What is the measure that the accelerometer is taking? Is it taking the displacement from a certain axis, or is it taking the how fast the device is accelerating? What are the units to it?

2. What is the max value that the accelerometer can handle?
