Hi all..

How can i access mini from outside...? Basically wanting access to iTunes Library, to read and/or write from my Macbook Pro. No iOS access required.

My mini came with Mavericks, but if i upgrade to server, would this be do what i need then ?

Just a note, I know Plex good, but out of the question, since i'll need to jailbreak Apple TV

Slink works well

Slink (www.slinkware.com) works well for me - exposes services on my Mac Mini at home easily.

No need for DynDNS etc, uses Universal PnP and does a good job at helping you configure home firewall/application passthru

Are you wanting to have direct access to the hard drive (like mapping a network drive) and file system or are you looking more for access to the desktop?

If your looking for Desktop access then the following might help.

I have my Mac Pro setup with both VNC and Team Viewer.

I can use VNC Viewer on my iphone to pull up the desktop or I can use Team Viewer to pull up my desktop on my laptop while out and about.

VNC is nice because it's lightweight. All I had to do with this was setup VNC port forwarding on my router at home, so that it forwards it to my Mac. I use Vine VNC because the built-in VNC server got broken on OSX Lion. I also use VNC within the house to pull up the desktop on my Windows computers.

I ended up also using Team Viewer because it gets through my works proxy since I think it uses the normal Internet port where as the VNC port is blocked.

Team Viewer supports file transfers between the two computers....which of course also allows me to get to files that are blocked at work....like the Team Viewer website :D

One of the main reasons I did this was so that I could mess with iTunes while I'm away from the house.

acess

No. I'm looking for just sharing my iTunes library from mini from outside, so i can add/modify/browse library/update details at will without needing to be on home network.

being tech-savy, i prefer opening ports if needed.

FYI : I'm assuming once my Mac mini is connected to network, i can do all of the above from my Macbook Pro.... Would this mean i'd need to change location in Preferences ? or what ?

If all you're looking for is a way to get to your itunes library, an alternative would be to pay the $25/yr fee to use itunes match and use Apple's servers rather than VPN into your house.

That's only for music...

My library is only movies. However, Apple should extent iTunes Match for movies too. :)

So, probably like a service them like ProXPN ?

Just VPN in...

But if you want that you need a relatively fast uplink from your ISP and it will cost you :D

Use Plex and instead of jail breaking, use the Airplay feature. I'm assuming you have an iOS device.

I don't need access on iOS..

Plus, i think Apple support helped me here.... Back to my Mac....

However, when asking about the security side of it, what encryption they used they were baffled..... Maybe ts berried in their documentation sections.

So, either i have few choices here :-

a. Back to my Mac or
b. Upgrade to OS X Server you own VPN (which i have no problem doing)

I'll try both and see, And if anyone was curious, Back to my mac does not need an Airport extreme.

I just wonder why people prefer using VNC if Mac's have it all in the box already. (assuming your going Mac > Mac)

Any reason why ? security issues, something i don't know about ?
