My wife bought a new MacBook Air (M2, A2681 model), transferred a whole lot of photos to it, and then forgot the password. She did the usual panic thing and started firing incorrect passwords until was locked. Now she says she has found the correct password, but because the computer is locked, it doesn't accept it. She doesn't have an Apple ID linked to it, so how can she get the MacBook to accept the correct remembered password?

OK. Apple support helped out eventually. For the benefit of others suffering this torture, I'll tell you what to do:

1. Press the on button and keep your finger on it until you see Options appear.
2. Choose the Options icon
3. At the top left of the screen, select Utilities
4. Select Terminal
5. Type resetpassword (no spaces) in the Terminal window and enter
6. A screen appears with the apple face icon
7. Choose Deactivate Mac and confirm
8. Enter a new password in both boxes, with a reminder in the third box
9. From the menu on the top left, choose restart
10. enter your new password, and now you should be into your locked Mac M2

Good luck!

Get your wife a "little black book" in which she can WRITE DOWN passwords.
Then you won't have to go through this again...

She will lose the little black book, hopeless case I'm afraid, but of course I love her dearly...
