Accessing Airport Time Capsule

Hi,

My father has recently passed and after going through his house to get together all the important documents and information for solicitors... we found nothing other than a 1TB Airport Time Capsule that was connected to his BT router.

Although I am quite versed with Mac products I am unsure how to access it to try and find any relevant information that the family or solicitors will needs. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am very sorry for your loss.

Time Capsules are typically password protected. We can hope that his Mac saved the password so you don't need it to get to the data.

Open Finder and go to the root level and select Network. From there you should be able to select the TC. If its drive does not then show up automatically you may be where you need the password; There should be a "connect as" button in the Finder window.

That's for manual data storage. Time Capsules are also typically used as a backup location for Time Machine. For that, click the Time Machine icon in the menu bar, and select "Browse backups". you can then fly backwards in time to see old versions of documents, deleted files, etc.

Thanks, do I need to go back to his house in order to do this? Or am I able to do this at my house? I have the hard drive with me and (hopefully) all the passwords that are possibilities.

The device should probably be set up like it was there, so if it were connected to his router over LAN you should at least connect it to LAN on your net. Honestly never tried using a direct connection to a Time Capsule, so you might even be able to do it easier connecting it directly to the Mac, but either way should work.
