Accessing external hard drive

Need a little help here. My MacBookPro (circa 2008) has finally given up the ghost. But it has a 512G SDD. I have a USB external HDD carrier, if I put the SSD into it, will my iMac see it when I plug in the USB cable, or do I have to change settings somewhere. I need to access and use some files that are on the SSD. And is it possible to move programs to the iMac, such as Microsoft office? Thanks!

If you are putting the drive into the correct enclosure, the iMac recognize it right away.

Almost ny USB3 2.5" peripheral will do:
- 2.5" enclosure
- USB3/SATA docking station
- USB3/SATA dongle/adapter
