Please be gentle with me!
I have a newish iMac, 2017 27" running Sierra 10.12. I also have a Time Capsule which used to back up my old iMac about 100 years ago and worked very well, wifi, linked the printer to it, blah blah blah. Life got in the way, I moved countries and because I needed a different plug and the iMac was nowhere near the internet thingy to wire everything up together to begin with, I never got round to it. Then my old iMac started to die and would no longer connect to the internet (different saga- it managed to lose its wifi software), so I transferred some of its files, photos etc on to a memory stick and bought a new iMac. All well and good. However, I then gave my old iMac to my dad so he could play with iMovie etc and burn DVDs, so I deleted everything that was still on it and emptied the trash, having failed completely to save my 30,000 word Masters dissertation from 2011. I have just plugged in the Time Capsule - its a flat, white, square one. It's flashing orange and I've attached it to the new Mac with an ethernet cable. The thingy that comes from Free which makes the internet work is in another room near the phone socket. When I open system preferences and pick Time Machine, it tells me my last backup was in 2015 (which will be right) but it can't find the disk. I've done the command-click on the time machine icon but it says my backup disk can't be found. It says I can set up Time Capsule, but Im not sure I want to and risk losing what's already taking up 1TB of space on there. In a finder window on the new iMac it says I have a remote disc, but there's nothing there. The AirPort utility says I'm connected to t'internet but that there are no configured base stations. So..... could someone walk me through accessing my Time Capsule, please? And I do mean a step by step dummies guide!
Thanks in anticipation.
