The back glass on my brand new iPhone 8 is misaligned, with a visible gap between the glass and the metal edge. Planned to have it swapped within the 14-day period, until finding a couple of dents today on the metal edge. No idea what caused the damage, as I've been very careful with it and keep it on the inside of my jacket with no other objects nearby.

So, can I still have it swapped? Not sure how to convince Apple/my carrier that I want an exchange because of the gap and not the cosmetic damage since one is considerably more visible than the other. The funny thing is, the dents I can live with since they are bound to happen one way or the other, but the misalignment reflects a quality issue that shouldn't appear on a high-end device that costs as much as it does.

Play dumb and ask them why the glass is misaligned and request for an exchange.

I don't think they will question you regarding the Dents, especially if your iPhone is already defective to begin with. I don't think Apple will contest that.

If they connect the gap to deformation of the bezel due to the dents, it is possible they could claim user damage. You could possibly just try returning the phone while you’re within the return period, and they may ignore the dents and gap...better to have a phone with matching numbers box anyways.

Agreed. If you're within the 14 day period (and during the holiday period, you have until January 8th to return items), you don't even have to tell them why you're returning it.

Well no, you can't return it if it's damaged by the user . . .

Exact circumstance, tiny gap between metal and glass, stayed and argumented for 40 minutes at the apple store with manager and employee. They kept saying all the iPhone X are done this way, I'm like bs.

The gap can scratch your finger, because of the metal gap.

Keep complaining. They replaced it under warranty at $0, but still, might not be easy task.

dont exchange, just return and say your wife just didnt love it (less likely to bust your balls if you pretend youre returning for someone else) and rebuy at a diff store.

less likely to get questioned when doing a return, just box it up nice and re wrap it in the cellophane if you have it, at most they will lift the phone up to look under it to see that the adcessories are there and thatll be about it.
