When I did this a row of text documents appeared above the dock. This wasn't Expose for apps, I had no text docs open. I have no idea what I did. Any clues folks?

Three fingers down App Exposé. Don't need an app open on the desktop, open on the dock & Menu bar is enough. Try selecting preview on the dock then three fingers down on the trackpad.
