Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A334 Safari/7534.48.3)

I was at the mall when I noticed my new IOS5 iPhone auto-joined the attwifi hotspot. Annoyed - I tried to turn the auto-join off, but I accidentally joined an unknown neighboring wifi instead with SSID - HP43.something.

I spatzed out when I did that as I am very conscientious of my wifi security. I don't even like using public wifi hotspots much...

I did disconnect from this unknown network and did a Forget This Network, but I'm concerned if I punched a security hole in my iPhone environment somehow?

I keep hearing about these man-in-the-middle attacks that are possible with rogue access-points that can steal your iPhone emails and stuff...

Should I be concerned about this from my accidental joining of unknown networks?

I don't know if you should be concerned but I believe the Settings app allows you to set your phone to ask before joining an unknown network.

You are fine, nothing to worry about security wise

I am a bit more up-tight on this than some of my friends. A lot of times when I hang out with them - they would join whatever wifi network is available nearby on their phone to get the fastest connection, but I have been more careful when treading those waters...

Still I wonder if all those security articles I read about rouge wifi networks are more about people who are consistently on then vs my quick-in, quick-out scenario...

I would say that those that are constantly connected to those open networks are more at risk. A quick connect and disconnect, you will be fine. You must remained connected for anyone to gain any kind of access at even the smallest level.

You're concernd about your security but you don't care about someone else's since you shared at least part of their SSID here, in a public place.

What are you talking about - that SSID I gave was an example - the real one wasn't even close to it...
