According to fox news .... Good news for those of us buying on the 29th

This is according to PC Magazine, not Fox News. PC Magazine is a branch under Ziff Davis.
 
He addresses one point that some folks around here keep bringing up - initial sales will be weak. Who wants to spend $600 on a phone other than yuppie gadget freaks (myself included).

This is a solid article and even the posters here support his theory. Many early adopters here are willing to break their contract and others are already planning to get the phone as soon as their existing contracts are up.
 
Some good points are made in the article. Every product can not launch perfectly and these things mentioned are hard to over come. Apple needs to get this product out to the hands of the consumer and then more people would either break contract, or for sure go with AT&T after their contract expires.
 
LOL look who it is wrote this article, some nobody from PCMag, those guys haven't been creditable for 5-10yrs. its funny how this guy (who is probably getting paid by microsoft) thinks an Apple phone will flop.
 
As much as I hate Fox News (their Iraq War predictions as previously stated) there are some valid points to this article. I do doubt that there will be low supply...or I guess I should say I hope there won't be :) but he makes a good point when saying that once these get into the hands of consumers and people start to see them out in the wild the sales will start booming. Another good point was about the fact that many people, if not millions, are waiting for their current contracts to end and will inevitably switch just to get the iPhone. I myself know of at least 30 people whom all want the phone but refuse to pay to get out of their contracts early.
 
Quit the bashing for the sake of bashing and deal with the actual points in the article, please.

I agree.

I'm not buying an iPhone. Why? I can't break my family plan. The increased cost of buying a new single-person plan in Cingular would add a ton of money to my monthly bill. Or I can break the contract for the WHOLE FAMILY and move EVERYONE over to Cingular and spend a bunch of money just for one phone.

No. Not going to happen. I'll look into getting an iPhone if and when:
A) It is available for T-Mobile
B) My contract expires.
Whichever comes first.

And I suspect many, many people feel the same. Most people are not willing to break their contract just cause some fancy new phone comes out.

Well, except my sister, who went to Verizon to get a Chocolate. But that was just stupid.

funniest thing i've read all day. I think *someone* is hedging their bets. This is the most non commital review ever. It's not gonna be a hit, but then it's going to be a hit.

I doubt it will reach the razr level not interms of status but in terms of volume. subscribe to this thread so you can see how right i am;)
 
He has a decent point here -- a lot of folks that would be interested in the iPhone would have to break-contract with their current providers. And when you're looking at a phone that's already pretty costly on its own, it might not make sense to take on additional cost just to switch. Many may not realize that switching cell carriers isn't like switching long distance companies on a landline phone.

Also, with (over)hyped gadgetry like the iPhone, a good lot of initial sales are from people just looking to make a profit by ebaying it. But if you have to sign up for phone service at the time of purchase at the store that might keep a lot of those people (thankfully) away. And with some of the gadget faithful being disappointed in some of the phone's features, that may keep some of the usual early adopters away.
 
I thought the article made some good points. I honestly have to wonder if apple hasn't created its own PS3. Superior product...too damn expensive for the target audience. Mind you I own a PS3 myself but you can't deny that price can be a BIG factor and Sony totally screwed up. Unfortunately no one can really properly predict this kind of thing so its all just one giant guess until the 29th.
 
I think the iPhone's history will be a little more solid than this up and down prediction. I think the iPhone will sell out first day, continue to sell out and sell out again for christmas. Oh yeah and people will have Razr burning parties after they buy their iPhone and Apple will take on 50% of the cell phone market share. It could happen ;)
 
The price of the PS3 or iPhone are not set in stone. They will gradually fall to more affordable levels and their market share will grow with it. I would say that there are at least a few million people in the US with the means and interest to buy the iPhone. It's not like Apple has to get 100% market share on day one or they will be doomed, it will take years like with the iPod.
