So i use the mute/unmute feature very often. If i choose to use the action button for something else, what are the alternatives to this without having to go deep through menus?

I use the mute switch quite often. Honestly, I can't think of another assignment I would want for that button.

The exception would be if we could disable the volume/sleep switch screenshot action because I accidentally take screenshots all the time when trying to adjust the volume with one hand. I would make the action button do screenshots.

You could setup a shortcut for a screenshot and assign that to the button?

I'm sure, but I would only do that if I could disable the current method otherwise it kind of defeats the purpose of assigning it to the action button for me. That makes me think...there are probably people who never or rarely use the screenshot functionality and how nice would it be to assign that two-button press to another action instead. Then you would have 2 customizable button shortcuts.

Does anyone know if the Action Button has haptic feedback that distinguishes between the mute and unmuted states? I use the physical button a lot (say, in a theater) just by feel, to confirm I've set it. Honestly, I'm afraid a button, even with haptic feedback, doesn't sound better for my personal preference.

Gotcha 👌

I am really hoping that they come up with a major update to the action button. While the idea is perfect, only allowing one thing assigned to it doesn't help. Since it replaced the quick mute button, default it should be still a mute switch with the ability to choose a second function.

As someone who uses the ring switch constantly, there is a huge benefit to this action button setup whether you have it set to mute or not. We can now control the ringer with focus modes. Have a work mode? Set it to enable itself via location (provided that's an option for you), add the option to silence the ringer. Now it mutes itself when you get to work, and turns the ringer back on when you leave.

I created a new focus just called "silent" with no other options other than silencing the ringer. Now when I turn it on, I have the options to turn it on for an hour, until calendar event is over, or until I leave that location.

I haven't tried, but I assume this can also be controlled with shortcuts since it's software based now. As much as I thought I would miss the hardware switch, this is way more useful...

You can also mute/unmute via the control center i think

Got my iPhone 15 PM and decided to see what happens.

When you have the action button set to silent mode and tap the button, you do NOT get haptics to feel the status. You have to look at the dynamic island to see silent mode status.

That’s a real bummer for those who wanted to check by feel.

When you have the action button set to anything else, you don’t get silent mode status in the dynamic island. DI activates for the selected action type, but effectively doesn’t nothing useful for any of them. Edit: except it shows the current focus mode

When I have my action button on my 15 Pro set to Silent I do get haptic feedback. Toggling from silent to ring gives one pulse. Toggling from ring to silent gives a series of pulses (maybe three or four?).

And each focus setting should be assigned to a specific action instead of just using one across iOS

I get the haptic feedback from the action button AND the control center button in every instance as long as I long press. Something is wrong with your test or your phone.

Yes - it is super easy to get used to.

Hold - single tap - phone is unmuted
Hold - triple tap - phone is muted (Just like flicking the switch on a prior iPhone)

Also the hold gesture is much faster than I expected.

I switched mine to camera launch though and love it.

I'm sure we are going to get more customization to the action button next year when it comes to the base model. I would love single tap actions with the phone is already unlocked, plus double tap/triple tap actions.

Yeah, you’re saying what I said. I was just making clear that short press = no haptic.
