Activate and unlock US iphone 2g for use on o2 HELP

Was given an iphone 2g last week from a friend that lived in the US for a few years.

he bought the iphone in the US so it is registered to AT&T so wanted to unlock it to work on o2 in the UK.

The iphone currently says no sim installed, insert a valid sim with no pin lock to activate iphone. And i am not to bothered about the iphone being jailbrocken.

I have read allot of threads and tried a number of things in order to activate and unlock my iphone 2g but nothing seems to work.

-I have tried Ziphone and got unknown error 0
-Tried QuickPwn and it wont even detect my iphone on the first page and cant get a green tick on the iphone icon.
-Tried PwnageTool but at the stage when it looks for the firmware it says it cannot find it, even though i have downloaded the correct firmware it to my desk top.

Nothing seems to be working and it is really starting to pee me off.

Would really appreciate it if someone would be able to solve my problem.

Before you do anything make sure you are using iTunes 8.1 or below.

First off, put the phone into DFU mode and let iTunes update it.

Don't activate it when DFU is finished. Run the QuickPwn process following this tutorial:

Tryed it on my brothers G4 Macbook this morning and all looked good.
Didnt have the password for his notebook though so couldnt complete the quickpwn.

Will post my progress when i get in from work.

ok so used quickpwn and this have activated my iphone and jailbroken it but it has not unlocked it ???

how do i do that????

Sorry, I thought you were using Windows.

On the Mac it is slightly different, you use Pwnage tool, it's straightforward enough, even if it looks a bit complex at first glance:

i m completly new to iphone community just 3 days back got 2G i phone frm uk i was using it in india was unlock and working fine
untill i tried to update it with firmware 2.2.1
now my phone says insert valid sim and not at all working with it
wat should i do
shall i use your oppiniun of quickpwn system to restore it ????

i dont even unsedrstand wats jailbroken thing?????

THANKS ALOT MATE THIS WORK GRET MY IPHONE BECOME COMPLETLY NEW BUT NO DATA ERASED ALL DATA RECOVER AND PHONE ALSO WORKS FINE
BUT GOT SOME ISSUE AS I GOT 8GB PHONE BUT ITS SHOWS ONLY 7.2 GB LEFT NO EXTRA INSTALLETION OF PHOTOS OR MUSIC ALLL STANDERD IPHONE APPLICATION NOT EVEN CYDIA OR INSTALL.APP

IS IT NORMAL OR SOMEHTING ELS????

one more thing can i update it again to newest 3.0 updation do i need to follow this whole thing again after updating the phone

I don't think it's normal. Usually iPhone software upgrades don't break your Caps Lock key, so I suspect that something else may be afoot.
