I live in south africa, my brother bought me a 16gig iphone 3Gs from England.
It was bought a week ago and I have no idea what firmware it has.
It came with an O2 pay and go sim.

I have not activated it yet, I need to unlock it to be able to use it.
Do I need to activate it with the O2 sim before I can jailbreak and unlock it?
Basicly I need advice on how or if I can activate and unlock it.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

UPDATE:
I dont know what firmware is on this phone, if its 3.0 can I unlock it then? Should I activate it with the O2 sim to check what the firmware is?

I suspect you are going to be out of luck. The baseband for recent 3GS's is not (yet) unlockable. It may never be.

But according to this page, iPhones bought in ZA are not carrier-locked: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1937

So I think you may need to send it back to him and ask him to send you the money instead, so you can buy one locally :D

Thanks

Damn, thanks for the info, I cant buy one here in SA because they are to expensive, much more expensive than from england. I guess I will just have to wait and see if an unlock ever happens.
