I'm on AT&T with 2 legit 3G phones that have 2 year contracts and I know that if I want to all I have to do is jailbreak them and if I ever need to go into the genius bar for something I can always restore and pretty much have a virgin iPhone right... (without violating warranty)??

I'm passing down my 1st gen iPhone to another family member.. and wondering how I could go about activating it so that they wouldn't have to sign up for a 2 year extension... (do I need to actually unlock the phone in order to do this even if its on At&t?)

If I do have to actually unlock then is there a way to get it back to a locked state so that it can be serviced by the applecare I have on it?

I'd rather keep it locked, sign up for the 2 year extension.. and keep the option of using my applecare since these phones while being works of art.. are prone to random hardware faliures :D

Sorry if this question has been asked in the past.. I did a quick search and didn't find an answer.

Weird you must be terrible at searching because I put your topic into the search bar and found this

Thanks, I did search.. I did say it was quick and not thorough... I read up a bit on the thread you linked. I would still like to know if anybody has had personal experience getting their phone serviced after unlocking..

the thread made it seem like its possible... but it wasn't very specific.

Yes, if you ever need to take the phone in just resync it with iTunes and it will be back to factory settings. With the "pwning" method there are no signs the phone was ever unlocked. I once had to take mine in and although I think the genius knew it had been unlocked (was never activated on AT&T I'm sure was a dead giveaway) but he couldn't prove it so they gave me a new phone.

Thanks... thats what I was hoping to hear!

Wait, how did that work? I have an iphone that I have on AT&T but not on an iphone contract, just a regular phone 40 dollar a month payment plan with no contract. The only reason I was even debating getting a 2 year contract was to have a warranty on the phone. How in the world did you go service a phone you did not have a contract on!? Please tell me what you said, hahahah.

Read the terms of the agreement. Warranty is NOT dependent on activation of the phone. Suspicious yes, but they couldn't prove otherwise.
