Hope someone can help me with this. My wife's original 2G iPhone broke (home button button stopped working) so we gave it to my son to use as an iPod/iTouch. I had to do a hard reset so now iTunes wont let me resync without activating it. Hopefully, I am just missing the obvious, but what is the best way to get this back working for the kid.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am using my 2g the same way.... just jailbreak it and you will be good to go. It will pop up no sim but that goes away. Good luck.

If I jailbreak, will iTunes recognize it? Because right now unless I activate it, it doesnt recognize.

Yes, the home button doesnt work, but when its being used for music 99% of the time, its not a big deal.......at least to a 4 year old.

Hmmmm, I read but it didn't sink in.... With home button inop I'm not sure how you can get it in DFU mode to jailbreak. To answer your other question, yes, iTunes will recognize it.
