Hi all -

Mega newbie (long time mac fan)

I have now set my sights on the super iPhone.

Now googling about brings back loads of results for old firmware, US iphones etc...

Basically - I want to go and get an iPhone from carphone warehouse today - use my existing o2 sim.

So, my question is:

With the latest firmware, do I need to activate the phone before unlocking it? If not, can anyone reccommend any software that will do this... I dont fancy having 2 contracts!

Only because it's the closest to where I work... I just figured.. go in there, pay for it come out..

Go to an O2 store if you can....

You need to unlock / jailbreak / activate it when you get it OTB. All you need is the dev-team's Pwnage tool. Does it all.

i wouls agree there, go to an O2 store and not a CPW cos the people in "MOST" cpw mis-sell you something, or they have been know to tell you that you have to take out insurance on the iPhone before you leave the store, when thats not true.

Just buy from wherever you want. So long as you remember that the only thing you have to buy is the phone. Ignore any addons or extras and only spend what you know it costs.

unlock advice

use ziphone, iliberty or pwnage to activate, jailbreak & unlock

There has been some significant negative posts re Ziphone and the way he unlocks (eg downgrading the bootloader, hard coding MAC addresses as a fix for no wifi problems, etc). Mac pwnage claims to do it the best. You decide, but browse the forums first.

Hope it helps reassure you, I bought UK iPhone from the O2 shop last month, read the tutorials on www.hackthatphone.com, ran iPlus 2.0 to jailbreak, activate and unlock. Now running on an O2 Simplicity SIM with everything working great, only costs me £22 / month with voice, texts and unlimited data, and a 30-day notice period.

You will have to unlock the phone to use any O2 SIM that didn't come with the iPhone.

If I was you I would use pwnage - it is out on mac now and we should see a windows release by tomorrow night as it is almost ready.

It requires a bit of reading up on so you know what your doing!

Read the FAQ - as you may have lots of questions that need to be answered and they are all there!

I also have links in my FAQ to a new hackthatphone.com guide as well to pwnage so read through it - watch the videos then try it!

Personally I think it is great - works perfectly and is 100% reversible.

lol the Pwnage FAQ - stickied at the VERY TOP of this forum! you can't miss it really! :D

Is that true? I thought unlock was only needed to allow you to use the iPhone on other networks. Only reason I ask it my iPhone will be arriving tomorrow and I plan to only activate it and use my existing O2 Simplicity SIM. ...I'll think about Jailbreaking once the 2.0 software is out and working fine with the hacks.

From 1.1.3 ONLY iPhone contract O2 SIMs work.

ALL OTHER O2 SIMS are locked out - including normal contract.

You have to unlock it to use any other O2 SIM as well!

Ok thanks for clearing that up, I guess i'd need to tick all the boxes in iLiberty+ (jailbreak, activate, unlock + unlock with 3.9FB) right?
