Activation locked out of my own phone?

Last week I wiped my 6s before I gave it to a family member. Once they went to activate it, to my surprise, it was locked by an AppleID that wasn't mine or theirs. Ever since I bought the phone via the Upgrade Program it's been in my posession, recently it's been locked in a safe. How could my phone be locked by another account?

I don't know much about this upgrading program. But if your phone comes from Apple Store, raise a complaint.

Sorry, it's Apple's iPhone Upgrade Program - the phone came straight from Apple. I'm headed to the store now.

You should be able to use proof-of-purchase to get Activation Lock removed. I don't know how this happens but it seems to have happened to others: https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...-unknown-email-im-the-original-owner.1947937/
