I have been wondering how long it will take to activate your phone on Friday. It seems the only way to activate the phone is through iTunes. Since this is the same for everyone, I wonder how the servers will handle all the traffic that day when everyone rushes home to activate their new phone. No one has really talked about this and for some reason I see the site being extremely slow or busy due to this to new activation policy.

If anyone has ever used ticketmaster to buy tickets then you know what I am talking about when a popular show goes on sale and sometimes you wait 30-45 minutes just to get through.

Do you think Apple is really prepared for this?

When they launched iTunes Plus people had trouble upgrading. I would hope (and think) they have more than enough power for all the people activating.

It should be rather quick, judging that everyone goes home right after they get the iPhone. So each timezone will be activating their iphone at once.

Sounds like a disaster waiting to happen.

Not really. Think about how many iPhone videos are downloaded at once, and the smallest video was 60MB.

It will be quick. They know how high the demand will be.

Yeah, I second this. I've been also thinking not just for iTunes sake, but AT&T as well.

If the Nation is really doing as many cartwheels as we think for iPhone, don't you think service might be a little different come Friday? Also consider how every plan offers unlimited data. How much of this will we really be able to test drive when everyone, and possibly their mother, is doing the same.

Let's see how it all holds up.

Apple has tons of bandwith already from iTunes and im sure they have upgraded it for the iphone. Downloads from apple are always double or TRIPLE the speed I get on the next fastest site.

I hope everyone is right and it goes smoothly but I guess we will wait and see come friday. Did anyone else have trouble getting onto AT&T's wireless site today? Its now running but for most of the day it has been bogged down with servers.

My question really is even though we activate it through iTunes, I'm sure AT&T have something to do with it since its their service to begin with and we all know how that can be sometimes. It's not Apple activating the phone, it is AT&T so even though we do it through iTunes it will be AT&T servers.

They have been updating the site, and a lot of things for the iPhone have been put up (the iPhone store locator, the FAQ) etc.

I am happy Apple / AT&T decided to activate via iTunes. Can you imagine how long the wait would be if all phone were activated in the store. Traditionally, my past experiences have been approximately 30 to 45 minutes to purchase and activate a phone at a store. If this were the case, it would take 150 hours to process just 300 iPhones at a store (300 iPhones x 30 min per phone / 60 minutes per house = 150 hours).
