Actual Apple HD tv? ...

What are the chances of apple actually making a 'proper' tv, announced at mw 09? just bought a sony v4000 32" bravia hd ready tv and its a bit like a giant psp screen - noticable blurring and smudgeness...

My ipod 5th gen wipes the floor with psp for video playback, so i think (i hope) apple could make a decent tv - perhaps with apple tv built in? or seemless connection with a powerbook?

Sony Bravias are supposed to be amazing. Are you using an HD cable or satellite receiver? Because if the receiver isn't HD, or if you're plugging the cable directly into the TV, the signal won't be HD and your picture is going to be poor.

Zero. This seems to be a recurrent fantasy around here, but it won't happen. Would make zero sense for Apple to enter this space.

Regarding the crappy picture on your new Bravia, it must be your source, Dude. Are you watching SD content from a cable or sat box? Sony makes decent LCDs, so I think if you hook up a proper HD source you'll be blown away by the picture. Heck, even upscaled SD-DVD should look wonderful on a 32" screen.

yeah its sd freeview - kinda ok in cinema mode in dark room. Think i just need to get used to it as im finding the refresh rate less noticeable - ie when it cuts from one person to the next, you have a residue left of the previous shot.

Having done a broadcast post production course and worked as a video editor, i have a good eye for video quality. If there was a crt the same size as my 32 lcd, i would snap at it, but of course that will never happen (well, i think until oled get to 32"). I think yes, hopefully hd will look better, at the mo i am using a xbox 1 console via component, which is ok, but still get the blurry-ness similar to psp screen.

Seemless connection between mac and sony tv - i have it connected via dvi-hdmi and its ok apart from video playback, at full screen when there is a cut there is this venetian blind like line that moves accross the video. I have the mac set as to 'mirror display'

i have till 31st jan 09 to return the tv, so will battle on and give it till early jan to see how accustomed i get to it.

Apple make 30" cinema displays, so perhaps, they could stretch to 32-37? and how hard would it be to make them tv displays rather than monitors?
If not apple making them, perhaps them teaming up with a tv manufacturer like sony (im joking) or panasonic? and wacking there apple tv in a slot or something?

You realize apple doesn't "make" anything to do with that display -- right? They assemble. They buy their LCDs from the same subset of manufacturers as everyone else .. including Sony. They buy their control boards and LEDs backlights from the same subset of manufactures. They only thing unique is their packaging and their specific choices of components. In most cases you will find from a components included standpoint, there are identical equivalents from other manufacturers. Just maybe in not so nice of a package.

Apple still has to perfect ATV. I thought for a long time, ended up with a Sony Blu-ray player. Would have gotten an ATV with built-in BR if available.

Apple is not a consumer electronics company. When it does decide to produce a consumer electronics item, it does so for specific reasons--most important is that it perceives an opportunity to bring its core strength--software and human interface design--to bear on creating a superior user experience. It was not the first company to produce an MP3 player, a media bridge, or a smartphone. But what distinguishes the iPod, the ATV and the iPhone from their respective competitors is superior software/ interface design, and tight integration with computers, especially Mac OS computers (surprise, surprise). I see no chance to apply this model to HDTVs; they are differentiated by factors that are not core competencies of Apple.

Not to mention the practical difficulties: What screen size(s) would they offer? How would they deal with varying international standards (e.g., NTSC and cable card slots for North American sets, PAL and SCART connections for European sets, ... and on and on)?

They could try partnering with an established TV maker as you've suggested, but I see no compelling reason for those companies to support Apple!

i think many companies would bite apples hand off if they wanted to have affiliation with them. iViera, iBravia etc... would sell more because apple is inside. wack a apple logo on and you can charge more!
