Actual Mac Virus?

Hey guys,
i haven't posted for a while and all has been well with my mac, untill now. Ive just moved into uni halls and my mac has gone all funky. I have to hard reboot it quite a lot and then it sometimes won't switch back on and just beeps at me. It also seems to be having trouble with my shuffle since i used it as a memory key. most programs are running slow, the thing is beachballing left right and centre. my mac has never been connected to the internet before halls. I have repaired permissions which has done nothing of significant effect, and have factory reset my shuffle, again with no joy. Do you guys have any idea what this is all about? i thought macs were immune to this sort of stuff, i am running OSX panther on a 4 month old 12in powerbook SD, i have had my firewall up while online. My thoughts are that this is internet, perhaps virus related, since this has all cropped up since using the internet.

This the first time you have been on the internet with it? Somehow sounds like either lack of enough memory (have you been stuffing it with music?) or bad memory. (How much memory have you put in it?) But others may have better ideas.

its got 512 ram, and has never slowed down before, and i have about 13 gigs of music on itunes. i know it sounds funny but i had another computer at home which was online, so yeah i have only just connected it

Buggy software/hack you installed recently, or bad RAM.

Do a hardware test with the TechTools CD if you bought AppleCare.

If that doesn't work, get your Apple OS X Tiger install CD, pop it in, and do an "ARCHIVE AND INSTALL." Don't select any other type of install. If you do an Archive And Install, you won't lose anything in your Home folder (ie: documents, music, photos). Doing such an install might fix your problem. See if that fixes the problem, and then tell us if it worked.

This wouldn't be caused by a virus. Sounds like a hardware problem to me. Call Apple or go to an Apple Genius and describe your problems. Take the time to write down the symptoms and the steps you took before and/or after they occur.

Another common problem is hard drive space. Make sure to always have 8GB of available hard drive space on your main hard drive. If you have less, you will see slowdowns caused by virtual memory management.

11%-17% of Macs require some sort of hardware repair in the first year according to pcmag.com, so far 0% of Macs needs to be cleaned of viruses during a year. Which is more likely to be your problem? (The same numbers for PC hardware are 16% to well over 20% for PCs and we all know that there are lots and lots of virus problems)
