Hi Guys. Whats the best solution?
We have 5 macs running high sieera.

Do you consider to buy a old Mac G5 to be a server?
Is it compatible?
do i need wi fi card in there?

Whats the best feasible option? a PC?

If you want a macOS based server, I'd still recommend you to get a regular Mac Mini, upgraded to your requirements. Hardware-wise, you pay a lot for what you get, though.

If you've got the chops (or can rent competence from someone), set up a small server based on Linux or Windows. Linux is probably the better choice from a technical perspective, if done well. It's probably easier to find someone who "more-or-less" can manage a Windows server, though, even though the initial investment will be higher.

Lots to consider.

Is this primarily to be used a file server? Other requirements?

Will users work on files on the server, or download, work, and then upload back to server?

Use Ethernet if at all possible, to minimize network issues.

Agree with Mikael above. If you don't have a full time server guy to setup and maintain a Windows box, the next best thing, that will take less tech manpower and less cost would be a Linux-based NAS. Tons to choose from, really need to determine the anticipated workflow, services required, how much space is needed (now, and for foreseeable future growth), and how it will be backed up.

Depending on space needed and internet connection, an cloud based sharing system is the most bang for the buck. If you consider hardware, labor, downtime risk, power, cooling, a UPS, backups, and security, patching, and on-going maintenance, not to mention replacing drives/server every 3-5 years....cloud storage is a pretty great deal.

Today to tool around forget the server market unless you want to make that your career! IMHO get your self a modern NAS box like either a Synology NAS or QNAP! You’ll be surprised what these smart NAS can do today!
