Hi All,

My M1 MBA I've been having issues with ADGUARD with safari. (Crashes, sluggishness and battery.)

I've turn't it off recently, to see if it really is ADGUARD that is causing my MBA to pink screen crash/restart, on top of the weird battery behaviour and sluggish safari. Give it a week and I'll be able to definitely say if that's the case hopefully.

Shame its turn't off though, Youtube on safari isn now coming up with a ton of adverts all of a sudden :(

I just checked, and the ADGUARD app on the MacBook is not a native M1 app, but needs to run through rosetta.

3 Questions:

Q1) Ad Blocker - Are there any native apps out there I can use?

Q2) Is there any way to identify before downloading?
The App Store descriptions can be very vague marketing blurb.

Q3) Are there any Ad Blockers you have been using on M1 MacBooks, that have been behaving themselves ok?

Hope you cn advise :)

There's a couple other threads here on this already.
1Blocker is ASi native.

I have been using Adblock pro and it seems to work ok, not sure if it is AS or not but it seems to work and doesn't seem to slow down the MacBook Air any.

If it is for your home location just install a Pi-Hole as your DNS server. Then every device is ad-free, and pages will load and execute faster.

AdBlock Pro seems to be the lowest system resource ad blocker for Safari. It is also native.
It has been updated to bypass the "white-screen skip ads" thing on YouTube, which is great!

I'll throw in another vote for 1Blocker. It's a native app for the M1, and as far as I can tell uses minimal resources. I've been using it for a couple years on all my Mac's and my iPhone and iPad.

Thanks for all the feedback guys :)

I'll give it a week, or however long I can stand it, before installing another ad blocker.

Be good to know for definite that it is ADGUARD in my case that is causing my M1 MBA to pink screen crash on a regular basis.

Plan "A" is - if no crash in the next week, next weekend will install a new ad blocker.

Cheers

M1 MPB here no issues with the free ADguard extension, works as advertised for me.

Contact AdGuard support. They’re very helpful and friendly. It should be working fine on the M1.

I use Wipr, I think it cost like $2, the dev looks like a nice person, Wipr itself is Apple Silicon native, and it doesn't allow "inobtrusive ads".
Me too, it works so well that I’d forgotten that I’d installed it. Well worth the couple of quid that it cost.

I have been using 1Blocker with Safari since December and it has been great. So I do recommend it.

However, if as @samotivad suggested, you have Little Snitch I would also suggest using Peter Lowe's blocklist whether you use an an-blocker or not, as it works system wide. Which saves hassle if you use more than one browser, for instance.

It's easy to use, you simply copy THIS URL and in Little Snitch's Rules window, click on the + in the bottom left corner. Select New Rule Group Subscription.. and past in the URL. Within the pop-up, you can further choose whether new rules are added automatically, or if you wish to review them manually first.

In case you don't trust the URL I have posted for you, here is Peter's website, which if you are going to use his list I recommend visiting, even if just to support his work with Patreon, the link to support him is at the top of the page, or you can click here.

Another possibly unpopular opinion, but what the heck. Please also support the websites you use every day. They need Ad revenue, or user donations to survive. It's hard enough for a lot of websites to stay afloat, never mind turn a profit, without us cutting their throats with ad-blockers. So, I do always suggest that we support the websites we use, what the heck would we read without them ;)

Any latest Chromium (Edge, Brave or Chrome) or Firefox browsers are M1, and have uBlock origin extension

I used AdGuard extension for years and switched to uBlock recently.
UBlock has everything that AdGuard has - but its open source and have some nice touches on top.

Next to adblocking - these two are great for modifying the looks of websites with block elements features.
It further cleans-up the pages and speeds the loading times..

Purely down to personal preferences..

Ka-Block! is native and works like a charm. Unobtrusive, lightweight, and very effective. I tried various other blockers (AdGuard, 1Blocker, Ghostery) and found all of them either annoyng (AdGuard), overpriced (AdGuard and 1Blocker require a monthly subscription), or ineffective (Ghostery). I wouldn't mind paying for an ad blocker (Wipr comes to mind) but I am not going to sign up for a monthly subscription. That's a hard no. A very very hard no.

your security is no better than what the original browser has minus the sum of all the add ons you have.

1Blocker offers a one-time fee.
