Ad Blockers. Do ANY work?

iPad 4

Haven't used an ipad in years. Hubby uses mine and I have to fix it when needed.
Not updated on changes, info, etc; over past few years.
He's complaining about the number of ads that ruin his browsing time.

Bought/paid for Ad Blocker (#1 app?) several months ago.
Doesn't seem to work anymore.

Looked up ad blockers on google and read about Crystal.
Went to read reviews + everyone said the app had sold out to advertisers-no good.

Tried to install about 6 or 7 others and each one came back saying it was not compatible with my device.

Can someone please explain what's going on with ads today + ad blockers and/or do any work?

Have adblock, or whatever its called in Safari settings turned on.

EDIT: I dont have these problems on my iMac but do run ad blocks that actually work

Content blockers are not compatible with your device. They only work on 64-bit devices (A7 processor and newer) so they are only supported since the iPad Air.

Well that is pretty Fascinating.

The last time I jailbroke iphones/ipads, well, its been a few years as i dont personally use either any longer.

So i assume one must buy the newest iPad in order to be free of such annoying browsing.
Damn and to think I once left Windows for similar annoying practises.

It's basically that more and more of the newer functionalities and features are implemented using 64-bit frameworks and libraries, as that is where things have been progressing over the years, which means that 32-bit devices are unable to use that particular code.

Fair enough.

But one would think older devices could have such features as well.
I like my latest iMacs or MBP to be a recent model but hubby isn't into computers and an ipad is best for him.
(MBP older as I no longer use it)

He shouldnt be made to feel as if he must consider the iPad 4 which is perfect for him, simply to browse news sites, out of date.

Curious. I have an almost 2 year old One Plus One 'droid phone I love, except that iPhone syncing is much easier. Was thinking of breaking down and purchasing a new iPhone as much as i hate to do so.

I run an ad block on my 'droid phone = No problems.
Will this become a problem on a new iphone soon or in 2/3 years if I do purchase one?

Not that likely given that the current phones are 64-bit and that technology is going to be around for some time before the next evolution. That said, just like with Android, newer iOS releases offer newer capabilities, so if some app or feature might require something newer than the version of iOS that you have or perhaps the hardware that you have doesn't support it then features related to that might not be available to you.

I guess not. I don't recall losing functionality with iOS updates.

What usually happens is that a 2-3 year old iPhones do not get some new features with new iOS updates - recently they have been doing that to 32-bit devices (A6 and older).

But, I will also say that I am not impressed with the fact that every time my husbands iPhone 5 updates, I have to go in and change a setting, I changed on the last update.
If I dont, his battery drains from 100% down to 18% and lower within an hour.

If he didn't have me to understand it needed changing, he like many others, would just assume his phone was no longer any good and would feel pressured to run out and buy the latest.

I really dont remember so much of this happening back in the early to mid 2000's.
If it were me, I'd put the hubby on Linux and android but he needs an idiot proof device and (as much as i love him) both of those would not offer him the ease of use and consistent familiarity that Apple does offer.

What settings do you need to change? Generally that is not the experience for most.
