Old Google Reader user. Tried Feedly, got annoyed with periodic ads (though not too common).

In my opinion, Apple News ads are obnoxious, and not all sites publish to the platform as it isn't a true RSS reader.

Trying not to set up a pi-hole. Also wouldn't help when away from home. Haven't set up a VPN. Not a big social media user.

In these post-heyday times of RSS, does anyone have an online, platform-agnostic, ad-free RSS reader they like?

The only one I've found so far is Feedreader Online, though neither the development blog nor its own RSS feed has any sign of life since 2017, and apparently there was some sort of acquisition of unclear nature in 2014.

Try The Old Reader.

Easy to use once its set up. Not sure if it has ads, as I use an adblocker anyways.

Thanks for the recommendation. Saw the site but was unsure if any "sponsored posts"/ads are implemented in such a way that they wouldn't be blocked with typical blocking software. Feedly's ads weren't blocked despite use of Wipr and one or two other blockers with which I experimented at the time. Sounds like The Old Reader's ads are as you aren't seeing any sponsored content?

I am not seeing any sponsored content, and if it exists, uBlock Origin zaps it.

It's not an online reader, but I use Newsboat in the terminal and love it.

Tiny Tiny RSS.

Accessible by browser and Android app. There might be an iOS app, I don't know.

For best results, self-host on a VPS.
For second best results, self-host on a shared webhost.

It's the closest I've come to Google Reader. The only downside is community support - the developer and some forum members are extremely obnoxious. If you can trouble shoot your hosting and most technical problems, you'll be fine.
