ad hoc and airport network

Here's the situation: New mac plugged into ethernet port on airport base station (new mac doesn't have airport, which pretty much tells you what it is doesn't it). Old Mac connected via airport to airport base station. Everything works fine.

What I'd like to do is use the second ethernet port on the new mac to connect to the ethernet port on the old mac to speed up file transfers between the two.

I initially just did internet sharing on the new mac but then the old mac couldn't find the new mac (as if they weren't on the same network). The new mac was assigned an ip address of 192.168.2.2. I may have goofed here, and if this is the simpler solution, let me know.

As of now, both are on the same network with 192.168.1.x addresses and can see each other.

I'm pretty sure you'll have to choose one or the other. Maybe disable the wireless connection on the old Mac, set up a new location for the direct cable link between both Macs (bypassing the router) and see how it goes. It'll be a bit of a hassle (changing locations on both machines and disabling AirPort on one), but it should work. I'm almost certain you won't be able to connect the two with AirPort and ethernet at the same time.
