We have a setup at work where we frequently switch between different laptops for presentations. We are using MacBook Pros, MacBook Airs, and a few Windows and Linux machines, all of different years, that we connect to an 8K monitor. M2 MacBook Pros are doing just fine - they handle the 8K screen easily. But our older laptops are struggling. At times, the monitor doesn't even display anything when we connect them.

I thought about lowering the resolution in the computer's settings, but this makes for ugly interruptions between the presentations, where every presenter has to know how to change the settings. Additionally, it hinders fast switching between laptops in discussions.

So, here's my question: Do you know of any specific cable or adapter that can sort of "pretend" that our 8K monitor is a 4K or 1080p one instead? I'm imagining something that we could plug into any computer that would allow it to think it's dealing with a lower resolution monitor, and hence, help avoid any performance hiccups.

I believe if you use an HDMI cable only capable of 4K or even only 1080p. It’ll force the screen and computer to use a lower resolution.
