generally should most if not all the USB C adaptors advertised for macbooks etc work ok with the M1 macs?
looking for something with SD card reader plus usb 3 inputs .

Yes, with a precaution:
We don't know yet if Apple has made any "changes" to its implementation of USBc (is it "USB4" now?). This won't be "known" until actual iMacs are on the desks of actual users.

But I would reckon that any adapters you have now will work fine.

With my M1 iMac I will be using the Black Box USB-C adapter dongle for: 3 USB-A, HDMI, Ethernet, SD & SD Mini, USB-C passthru so I don't "lose" a port.
